Why don't DVD player manufacturures allow you to send upscaled signals over component without the need of a hack ? It's not that the content needs to be protected as it's analogue and it's not that it can't be done either.

Is there another reason that I'm simply missing ?

AFAIK it's because the DVDCCA don't allow it. While there are one or two Far Eastern players that do, eg. the Momitsu, I'm sure I've read somewhere this isn't allowed under the terms of the license needed to decode CSS-protected media. Same goes for HD-DVD, component output will be limited to 480p/576p I believe.
