I've been thinking of buying a DVD Recorder but none I've seen have a digital audio input. This means you can't record 5.1 or DTS sound if it becomes available via Set Top Box in the future. Is this the case or am I missing something obvious?

No DVD recorders allow 5.1 recording and I'm not sure (IMHO) if they ever will as we have discussed in other threads, once you can record a perfect picture and perfect 5.1 sound to DVD who on earth will ever buy a pre-recorded DVD for a lot of stuff you could just record from the television ?
I'm sure the technology exists already but is sadly being kept from us :(

Well spotted. It certainly looks genuine. But none of the Philips models currently on their UK website have digital inputs so maybe they've given up on it. Or maybe someone threatened to sue them!

heres a link to another philips page

    http://www.dvdrecorder.philips.com/index.cfm?event=features

looks like the 5.1 is new

    Digital 5.1 Multi-Channel Recording

Until now, DVD Recorders have provided analog audio inputs only. Philips is the first to introduce DVD Recorders with digital audio inputs. Finally, it's possible to record movies complete with the original 5.1 multi-channel sound—the same sound quality as commercial DVDs.

They've been promising the 740 for over a year and it's not materialised yet. I wouldn't hold your breathe on it either.

    Regards

Indeed - Philips have been promising Dolby Digital recording for along time without any products actually arriving yet. When they do arrive it may be prudent to pause to see if they suffer lip sync problems which is, by all accounts, one of the major fears these companies have held off adding what is a (relatively) simple connection.

In Philips case it doesn't help that in the past they have described standard DD2.0 recording (which all DVD recorders do) as "equal to commercial DVDs" in sound quality/performance.

It should be noted if you desperately want to record 5.1 sound - and, from my perspective, UK sources are woefully lacking (surely most people would rather pay for better PQ and DTS soundtracks on commercial DVDs rather than record from Sky Movies!?!) then there are a number of PC solutions available.
