Why "Monoblocks"

    Can someone tell me why mono power amps are called "monoblocks", or even "monoblocs"? Why not just "mono amp"? I've never heard a normal stereo power amp called a "stereoblock". :confused:

    It rolls of the tongue quite nicely and does sound quite cool. I might start referring to stereo power amps as stereoblocs though, when the hifi press pick it up we'll all know where from :)

    Quite honestly this is better suited to general chat,but as eviljohn2 says,it's just a marketing/sales term.

    My other half said now about "duoblocs" ... or maybe "duploblocs"

    ... and now we have sorted that out... how about 5 or 7 channel "blocs" :laugh:

    Steff didnt you used to be a member by another name:
    Mono BLocks refer to power amp only sections IIRC no pre amp section.

    My kids have been playing with Duploblocs for years. Talk about starting them early :D
