Is that a pond or a pool?

Very good building work, I must say, but why is it concrete all around, why not gradated and natural, like a wood lining?

    Its 6' 8" deep

Is it big enough, probably not we allways want bigger :D

Its a Koi pond and will only ever be a pool when I move.

When the blocks are finished it will be rendered then fiberglassed.

40 ton of clay was dug out

2.5 cubic metres of RC35 concrete poured for the base

6m of steel mesh used to strengthen base

18m of 12mm steel rebar used between inner and outer walls to add strength

Over 400 blocks have been used.

    3 Ton of Builders sand

1 Ton of Ballast (for mixing concrete)

    40 x 25kg bags of Cement

100 bags of ready mix concrete (before I realised I should of got ballast and mixed my own :suicide:

    around 400 walling bricks.

    6m 4" pressure pipe
    6m 1" pressure pipe
    6m 2" pressure pipe
    15m 2" waste pipe

    Coping stone still to get
Decking to cover Filter area still to get
    Pergola still to make.

Major repairs to garden once i finish pond lol

Was averaging 3 hours sleep a day in the first couple weeks between Day Job and the pond but once was dug out managed get a bit more.

Can't wait untill its complete and Koi are in :smashin:

    Cheers

Are you making your own filters ? How many gallons will the pond hold ?
    Mine is about 2,500 gallons.

The filters run behind the pond along the back and down the left side.

The pond will be around 5000 gallon and 1000 gallon in the filters.

Do you show the koi then ?
Mine are mostly from the cheaper end of the scale, I bought them all small and have grown them on to reasonable sizes so far. They have just gone mad a few minutes ago whilst I was hand feeding them some Silkworm Pupae - they go absolutely crazy for them !

Hi John, no I don't show the Koi.

Like you I bought my koi small 10cm and watched them grow in my 2000 gallon pond.

It was while I was building this new pond that an amazing offer came up as a Koi keeper was changing his pond into a pool prior to selling his house and was selling all his koi and equipment.

I could only afford them 4 above and most of his equipment. He did have better Koi than those 4 but I couldnt afford them and also was concerned about keeping them in my 2000 gallon pond until the new one is ready.

That last pic of the Gin Rin Sanke, she is the largest at 22.5 inches and spawned in my pond 2 days after I got her.

All my koi enjoyed the eggs lol.

    Nice looking fish
If you're ever in the Mansfield area it's well worth a visit to my local koi dealer at Sookholme Koi, he's not cheap but has some excellent fish.

Havn't seen or been bothered by one in 3 years

there was one too busy nicking my neighbours fish accross the road from me.
    He cured that tho ;)

The cats left one of his small koi on my drive one day lol, I panicked thinking it could be one of mine but all mine where accounted for.

A cat also dragged on of his 18 inch stergeon across the road, he found it flapping about on the pavement and put it back in his pond and waggled it about for an hour and several weeks later its as good as ever

Fab looking pond! Be sure to post the final photos. :) :smashin:
Have you done all this yourself? It seems very well done.
Have you considered installing any lighting underwater or surface level?

Where I used to live my two neighbours opposite built giant koi ponds, the first one to finish stocked up there pond with over a 1k worth of koi.
A few days later we were sitting in the local with both my neighbours talking about the ponds and the plans and were invited back to view the finished product. Believe it or not in the middle of a Saturday afternoon some scumbags had been through the woods at the back of the property and over the back fence and nicked all the fish!!
How the **** do you steal great big fish like that some of them were 10lb – 12lb

He had not had chance to get them insured. :suicide:

Still everything turned out alright in the end both the neighbours have well established ponds and well insured stock. There also members of some koi society and in the summer get coach loads of people turn up to view the houses the have even got some deal going with our local landlord as they take a coach load of guests in for Sunday lunch and they get to eat for free all year round. :)

Can not wait to get my own place so I can have my own koi pond, I am also itching for a marine aquarium but need to wait till I stop moving round the country for that! :)

Good Luck with the carp and don’t forget insurance.

I went for the gound level pond, but have had to stick stones and stuff all around the edge this year due to all the sodding cats on the street trying to get my fish

It looked far better last year (3rd photo) so might have to rethink things. I'd also like to find a way of hiding the filters.
I forgot to mention that it's 6 foot at the deep end and just over 4 foot deep at the shallow (near) end. I wanted to go 6 foot deep all along but there are drain going right across at the 4 foot end, so I thought I'd better stop at that depth !

The third pic is nice, its a shame what you have to do to keep cats at bay.

For my 2000 gallon pond I ended up building a shed round my filter to hide it.
