12 months ago I bought a Sharp Aquos LC26GA4E. It retailed for £1600 and I got it for what I thought was a bargain £1000.
Now the Sharp Aquos LC26GA6E is out with HDMI retailing for £600!!!
Why have prices fallen so sharply in such a short period of time??

    Progress.

You knew that when you bought it, didn't you?

I sit here with my pc and Eizo 18.2" LCD monitor.

I bought this monitor last month for £90 on eBay. It's as new.

I looked on Eizo's website and they were selling them 26 months ago (to be precise) for £2150 plus VAT).

The equivalent Sony was £2798 + VAT.

Sony has just announced 10,000 redundancies worldwide. It's expecting Billions of yen losses.

They were burnt by making in Japan, not China.

Don't say you didn't know either. Come on.

Sony doesn't make any LCD panels in China or anywhere else. Its first in-house production will be in the Samsung Joint venture.

psp screen made both in japan, and in CMO (China), so they are starting to use OEM's.

The current range of LCD's come from a variety of sources. The panels are in all probability from the Samsung/Sony venture in S Korea. Someone said the electronics are probably from China and the sets are 'assembled' in Spain which has the lowest labour rates in the EU. All this ought to keep the prices down.

Are the GA6 sets exactly the same as the GA3? except for the fact that the DVI has been replaced with HDMI?

All the other specs look the same to me.

Spain cheapest labour rates in Europe...?

Has anyone mentioned this to the respective governments of Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

    "or anywhere else"

    This is wrong.

The panels will be made in Korea, at the S-LCD Corp plant. Technically, a joint venture but located at the side of Samsung's plant.
The point is that it's far cheaper to produce in Korea, or China, than Japan.

I also read some where that the LCD panel production capacity has doubled in the last 12 months. I always look at it this way, my next tv will be cheaper.

    I'm sure you're right Graham.

I just hope that the corporations are still maintaining R&D, presumably in Japan or somewhere developed and it's not just about making bog-standard stuff "cheap as chips".

You can buy "B" brand beans for 7p, for example and Heinz for 33p.

    Which do you want?

After speaking to Sharp I was told the GA6 using "real" technology which deciphers HD better whereas the GA3/4 didnt. Im thinking Ive been given misinformation though because Im sure I remember "real" technology being listed on the specs when I bought mine  Socket wise yes the DVI has been replaced with the HDMI.

Unfortunately 12 months in the electronics industry is a long time!
