Anyone else notice that the LCD threads are getting more viewers than us? Is it becoz LCD is more popular than plasmas or more ppl buying LCD's nowadays? :D

I think a great deal of it now comes down to price. LCDs with Full HD 1080P are cheaper then Full HD 1080P plasma sets. Even though my current TV has done me proud and gave me some brilliant viewing expriences even I would like to eventually go Plasma.

Perhaps LCD owners just have more issues to address, you know, lower contrast ratios, muddy blacks, poor motion handling etc...

Edit - looks like rewerb beat me to it!

What prices are the Sony's coming in at then? My Panny PZ80 has just cost me £599 with 5 year warranty from JL.

Don't think I could get cheaper than that for a Full HD screen to be honest!

Maybe some people don't know the difference and some don't care about the difference. If its flat it will do if its cheap its even better. Plus maybe its also a size thing.

I would say it has a lot to do with size of screens.

LCDs come in a huge range of sizes from the very small to the big. Many people still buy 26" and 32" panels and apart from one 32" Plasma you are restricted to LCD.
In general, Plasmas start at 37" (and there is only one of those) so Plasam is at a disadvantage because of that.
Also, the is still a misconception that LCD is the superior technology and that plasmas need gassing, don't last as long and suffer terribly from screen burn.

lol, god all the funny people out today :D

Seriously, more people in the LCD's because they are cheaper for better specs on paper. There are more people using TV's for gaming and there is still that thing that people think plasma and gaming are bad together. And there is also a more varied size range, not everyone is looking for a 42 inch screen.

and the one I think is the biggest reason, is that there is a so many makes and models of LCD out there. It's basically Pio, pana or samsung been discussed in the Plasma forum.

Well there is no need to read when overall pics are in a better on plasma

Or it is more marketing by the likes of high street stores, online etc.

Seems to me that LCD is the popular choice these days.

Can't help but notice a shift towards LCD in the last 6 months or so.

I think plasma owners are mostly mature people with work vs. young college goers who hang around all day, playing games and surfing LCD forums.:D

The amount of people who i know socially or work with who swear LCDs are better than plasma after seeing both at places like comet and dixons is unbelievable. Friend came round to help me put my new lx-5090 up on the wall bracket a few days ago and said he was looking at getting a 52" sony lcd for £2000. I then showed him a side by side viewing of iron man in HD on the plasma and my Dell profesional 24" that i paid £450 for. Highlighted the back light not allowing as deep blacks on the lcd and that if he was going to spend that kind of money to go see a properly set up sony to compare to the pioneer and explained to him why LCDs looked better in shops like dixons with there bright abient lighting. Now i hope he sees the light and gets the plasma.

Maybe there is a really rational explanation (I doubt it but hey.....)

BOTH Plasma and LCD technologies have their shortcomings in equal measure. They are different shortcomings but nevertheless they do exist.

Different peoples' choices and/or visual sensitivities vary. Just because "you" (meaning, I suppose, anybody who has chosen Plasma over LCD) prefer Plasma and consider it "better" does not mean that it will be a better choice for everybody. There must be millions of happy LCD owners out there who have no consciousness at all of the limitations with that technology. And then some more who, like me, do know its limitations but find them more tolerable than those of Plasma. Or who had no choice to make because of size. For all of them, choosing LCD was not a mistake.

Also, it's worth bearing in mind that a lot of people don't necessarily choose "plasma over LCD". Just because someone goes for W4000 over PZ80, for example, does not mean that the decision was at all influenced by the technology the sets use.

I'd also say that, personally, between these two, despite being a long time plasma fan, I'd probably go for the W4000 if pushed for a decision. Mainly because I can put up with its shortcomings ahead of the Panasonic's green primary issue (though that could potentially be solved by calibration, putting the ball back into the other court).

I suppose what I'm trying to get across here in a rambling and comma infested way is that it's no longer fair to judge a set mainly on the technology it uses. There are huge differences in quality between the various plasmas, and LCDs, on the market. Some are better and some are worse, of both technologies. Sets have to be compared as sets, not knights in the battle army of a particular technology.

People have heard of LCD - they sit in front of one on their PC, it works fine so it will make a good TV.

Other than that I think it's pretty obvious. LCD panels have the majority of the market share, there is a wider choice from a wider number of manufacturers. Having been in currys yesterday the choice of LCD TV's from samsung alone outnumbers the plasmas from every manufacturers.

32" is still the sweet spot price/size for the majority of lounges where people sit 6-8ft away. Anything larger seems like excess to a lot of consumers.

You only have to look at the number of 'screen burn' questions in this forum. The slightly more savvy consumer who does consider plasma has usually heard from a friend of a friend that the kids watched CBeebies for 3 hours and now he can see the logo when he's watching deep space 9. It's enough to put anyone off.

Oh, and they use a lot less power....

i agree with most of the points above. Aswell i think people prefer the designs of LCD average joe who isnt too botherd about being tech savvy may well choose a nice LCD with a funky blue light running all the way across the bezel. would be totally anoying to me but then i can understand that some people are happy to go for looks over quality and just arent that botherd by picture. My friend has an ambilight LCD he doesnt use the ambilight much now but when he first got it he was elated to have a disco telly:cool:

BTW its my birthday anyone wanna send me some john lewis vouchers:arty:

All that is true what is said in support of LCDs. Just because Toyota sells more than an Audi does not necessarily mean it indicates anything like an edge on technology, comfort and popularity. Its just that more people find it convenient to buy a Toyota.

I've got a plasma myself (one of the cheapest, a PX8E) and sometimes I wish I had bought an LCD. Mainly the visible image retention on black backgrounds bothers me. Sure it's a deep black but if there are white spots on it from image retention it just seems like backlight bleeding from an LCD...

But I guess if you don't cheap out when buying a TV it should be a lot better. Cheap LCD's probably have other shortcomings anyway.
