Why does my Plasma state 576p via componant?

You're not getting extra resolution, this relates to the hidden lines of data that are being added.

576p means that the Wii is outputting PAL Progressive. If the games are truely running in 480p then I expect that the Wii is adding a 48 pixel border top and bottom.

no 576p is 576p no two ways about it.

could be a possibility his wii is outputting 576p @ 50hz but i doubt it

probably his tv doing something odd with the signal
 
Wow, now this is weird. What Broadsword said - what happens when you play US DVDs (without putting them through an Upscaling player)?
