Is the 3805 THAT hot that it is one of the most popular amps out?
No, it is distinctly average soundwise, it just happens to get a lot of press. These days most consumers read magazines and ask questions on forums and then buy without ever listening.
Well then is the Pioneer AX5i better?
I have had both the Pioneer AX5 and Denon 3805 within the last month
Both machines are fantastic performers IMHO. Neither is better than the other, both sound different though. The Pioneer appears sharper/crisper in sound whilst the Denon is a slightly warmer sound. It depends on your tastes and speakers to which one you would prefer.
I now have the Arcam AVR300, which is considerably more expensive than either of the above. If you mostly watch movies then I'd go with either the Pioneer or Denon. Its only when CD playback is important that the Arcam comes into its own, and boy does it
Go to your local dealer and demo the gear before buying
The Yamaha 2500 is better than both
Just kidding, very subjective opinion of course but then like speakers, preferences relating to receivers are just as subjective, its what rocks your boat at end of the day
I have had to listen 3805, yam 2500, and many more. I didnt listen ARCAM.
I choose NAD T773 among them because they are toys compairing to him.
For my system monitor audio's silver series 5.1 it was far the best option.
My friend bought 3805 he doesn't want listen to me, now he has sold it and by NAD T773.
