A bulbs cost is about 10 times the worth of a projector without one.

Because they can be and there is no competition.

So you decide to upgrade your projector rather than buying a new bulb. More money for the manufacturers.

Why not use the search button ?

From a thread earlier this month (14 March) :

Lamps for projectors are not fast moving consumer goods, or a mass market item, and are complex things to make. They indoubtedly cost more to manufacture, but the final cost also reflects the fact that the tooling, materials, labour, distribution etc. has to be recovered over a smaller number of items finally sold. Tempest is right about no competition insofar as there isn't an non-OEM supplier of lamps for projectors, but this is down to the difficulty in manufacture and small numbers of potential sales.

Maybe one day there will be a single lamp that will fit all consumer projectors that Joe Public can afford, then the price will be a lot cheaper due to the larger product run. Lets face it, there are quite a few different pj manufacturers out there, who are making new pjs all the time. Other than Sim2 who seem to design them with a considerably longer life span, there's no real reason why all the others can't settle on a single lamp design so that both manufacturing and retail costs can be reduced.

You've just got to look over on projectorcentral to see how many pjs there are in the search list, and how many are now out of production. Nearly all will have a unique lamp no doubt.

    One day maybe..

    Gary.
