Why are 3D glasses so bad?

I've been doing the rounds viewing the different 3D TVs from Panasonic, Sony and Samsung. Looking at 50 inch models.
So far, 3DTV wise I like the Panasonic the best, seemed to have the least ghosting which plague the other 2 and very good 2D. Samsung was the worst for 3D but very suprisingly the 2D -> 3D picture wasn't actually that bad and not as gimmicky as I expected.

The thing I have noticed though is the glasses. Most 3D glasses are very badly designed. They have enormous frames which block out a lot of peripheral vision (most likely the plan to get you to focus more on the 3D) and are being designed to fit over glasses but can you image buying sun glasses that actually fit over normal glasses...that's what it feels like.

Surely there should be options without the bad frames and poor position.

The Samsung was actually the best without a frame on the bottom and fairly comfortable.
SAMSUNG SSG-2100AB/XC 3D GLASSES

Although the Panasonic has the best telly IMO the glasses are the worst. They sit far away from your face with a thick frame and were not comfortable at all.
PANASONIC TY-EW3D10E 3D GLASSES

Sony seems between the two but still not great.

How's this for a compromise!!!!

Apparently there will be glasses some time that are not tied to the manufacturer but when?

Can someone please put their design hats on and come up with something comfortable and good looking that doesn't make you feel like an idiot!

I think the idea of the deep side is to block peripheral vision but perhaps for the reason the Panasonic ones fail IMO; because Panasonic are open at the side if you get any stray light in you see the flicker of the glasses, block the side off & it stops. This is why IMO the Sony ones are a better design & can be purchased for just short of £50 on line. I would love to know if they are compatible with Panasonic unlike the reversed ones of the Samsung?
