My wife's on it. She uses it to keep friends and family up to date with what is going on with our little diva.

I stay off the thing even though alot of my mates are on there. Can't be bothered personally.

Companies have started to block sites like Facebook due to loss of productivity.

I am, only recently got in to it (and myspace). Before I actually tried it I was very cynical but it is a lot of fun to be honest.

I agree Dave, there is a lot of crap on there. But it is a good way to keep in contact with once long-forgotten mates and with people who have shared life experiences/acquaintances.

I'm Doing chemistry at edinburgh university if anyone wants to add me feel free and i dont like giving out my name but my picture will make it quite obvious i am from AVforums

I have an account under a psuedonym. I use it to become "friends" with complete strangers to look at photo's of women they don't really know.

Facebook. It takes vanity and superficial culture to a new level.
heard that there has been an increase in the number of people requesting to get their photo's softened up and airbrushed down at boots.

Friends talking, re-acquainting and sharing experiences?

Sure, but then there's socially handicapped teens collecting "online friends" as a virtual status symbol of there "net" popularity.

Then there's the online bullying, goading, taunting and the grooming by predators.

Oh and let's not forget the zealots and extremists who need a platform to expound their mania.

Some like the founder asks anyone who sends a request

Most though only accept requests from their friends and people they have met out socialising or at school/college/uni

A chip somewhere perhaps?

one important factor is having friends to make it enjoyable as opposed to strangers

but you wotn face crap like that unless you search for it, or if you are invited to join by friends,

Didnt have to do much searching though. It was there staring at me when I joined the B@H network and then went I went looking for an Argentine group. Dont get me wrong potentially Facebook could be quite good but it does need proper policing. Another thing when I tried to start a proper discussion someone jumped in and said it was too heavy implying they only wanted ot take part in totally frivolous threads which on the whole are a waste of space IMO.A few ok but they are all like that:thumbsdow

Ah well in that case let's ban the whole Internet because, and this may come as a shock, most of it is full of rubbish.

Calling Facebook rubbish because of two group is naive at best.

I said a lot of it is rubbish which it is but not all of it . Nothing naive about that. Just stating a fact

But surely part of the apppeal of Facebook is to meet new people, not just converse with those one already knows

not for me, or most of my friends, we use it to stay in touch, hold group discussions etc, as opposed to email

it's like television, ignore the rubbish channels (groups) and focus on the ones that appeal to you,

General chat is sometimes full of rubbish posted by people (myself included) doesnt mean i write off the whole of general chat as rubbish

To my way of thinking thats kind of incestuous not to say very cliquey.I would never do that . i meet my friends somewhere or send emails . Facebook to me is about meeting new ones one is never likely to come across in real life

well you obivoulsy have differnent uses for it, which obvisoulsy are not working for you,

I use it for a different purpose and it suits that purpose extremly well

at the moment it isnt but thats beacuse its riddled with teenagers or twerps just looking for an arguement but potentially it could work for peeps who are open minded, tolerant , reasonably adult and wish to meet new people. In fact this group performs that role to some extent although its confined largely to male AV addicts who are ,by and large ,British. Cant bear those forums such as the Ebay ones where the same suspects appear everytime and anyone new ( or heaven forbid) foreign is frozen out.Heck what the point of that??

Facebook have become dangerous with problems hitting it from every sides:

- the owners of facebook were sued recently for stealing someone else business idea
- there was a massive crash last month were i actually got to read someone elses inbox and private messages
- and now companies are banning it at workplaces

when is it going to stop or is it going to get worst??

I work with people who spend all day just dipping in and out of it. The firewall has been specifically set up to monitor traffic to that site and the stats are showing a substantial amount of time and bandwidth being utilised.

I can understand why businesses are now blocking it as it seems to becoming the latest fashionable corporate addiction.
