Who in your opinion have the greatest voices, it may be someone who you don't particularly like, but you can appreciate their singing ability. Their range and just the sound of their voice is a pleasure.

Mine would be, (sticking to popular music.)

MALE:

Mick Hucknal,
Luther Vandross,
Freddie Mercury.

FEMALE:

Barbra Streisand,
Aretha Franklin,
Karen Carpenter. (So melodic)

My favourite voices:

Liz Frazer (Cocteau Twins), Skye (Morcheeba), Natacha Atlas, Sinéad O'Connor, Dorothy Moore, Françoise Hardy, Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders)...

David McAlmont, Morrissey, Jeff Buckley, Jean-Louis Murat, Morten Harket (A-ha), Thom Yorke (on early Radiohead albums), Roy Orbisson, John Lennon...

In terms of contemporary music, I think Norah Jones' voice is really stirring.

Not quite Jazz, not quite country. A flavour all her own, and very tasty!

In the early Deep Purple days, Ian Gillan's voice was astonishing for sheer power and range - just take a listen to the greatest live rock album of all time (imho), Made in Japan. The notes he reaches during 'Child in Time' still make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up !

As for David Coverdale, Gillans replacement in the Purple line up in the mid-70's, I'll own that his voice has gotten better, but I have live albums where quite frankly he squawks like a demented chicken !
