I know Romy, one of the better bird photographers in the far east (and there's a good few of them) he's a regular on birforum.net. He chooses his gear sensibly and not a follower of fashion... note the Manfrotto gimbal head instead of the usual Wimberley, its far cheaper and hardly fashionable but it does it's job (i know, I use one).

Here's a shot of the longest lens I know of (even longer than the Canon 1200mm f5.6)... it's the Nikon 1200mm-1700mm f5.6-f8. That dinky little lens next to it is the Nikon 600mm f4  And look at this guy with one over his shoulder

I was on a beach on holiday in South France a few years back. This bloke taps me on the shoulder and mumbles something in France, he realised I was English, so says "Can I take Photo" I thought this was a bit strange so did my best pose for him.

Anyway out of his bag comes a lense just like that, and I'm thinking, is he going to do an extreme close up of part of me or what. Anyway, he turns me around, which worries me more, then puts his length on my shoulder and starts snapping away.

I later realise hiding behind all the sun brollies are loads of paparazzi snapping away at some bald bloke (Fabien Bartez) and skinny boy (linda evangelista).

    To my relief.
