John, I have a DV27A and compared it to a friends DV27+. I can't say I noticed any major improvements other than the addition of DVDA.

The quality of its DVDA is outstanding and a huge step up from the Pioneer 757 which is the only other DVDA player I tried in my system.

I'm using a Pioneer 503MXE plasma and can't see any difference in PQ. I haven't compared all the menus yet to see if there are any additional options.

I do think it is worth the £400.00 to upgrade if you want DVDA which is awesome.

    Hi gazza,
I was hoping you wasn't going to say that.................I will now have to get the DVD-A upgrade done

When you say it was a huge stepup form the pioneer, can you "scale that" for me, ie if it were a common or garden CD player, would it be like comparing a £200 player to say something like a £1,000 player? I know that's a bit of a Richard Cranium question, but my brain is frazzeled at the moment try to work out what interconnects and cable to use with my new system and I need it simple and childlike
    ;)

    Regards
    John

    Hi John,

Obviously you must factor in the lack of DVDA albums at present. IMO the Arcam DVDA sounds better than any ordinary CD player I have heard right upto about £4000.00. I have a Marantz CD7 at present and it is far better than that.

As you know most people rate the DV27 at just below the level of the CD23/CD33 in ordinary CD playback, which I would tend to agree with.

I know what you mean your brain is frazzeled with all this upgrading. It's not just £400.00 for the upgrade but extra I/Cs then new DVDA media.

Obviously you will also get bass management and on board DTS/DD decoding after the upgrade.

    Regards

    Gazza

    John,

Just noticed I didn't answer your question re Pioneer 757 and the DV27A.

I heard them days apart in my system. The Pioneer sounded subdued and was lacking alot of detail in comparison. I would say that if the Pioneer was your typical £200 cd player then the Arcam would be £1500+. The same sort of difference I heard moving from an old Marantz CD67SE to the Marantz CD7.

I was contemplating in getting the Arcam DVD 89 rather than the DV88+.

However, as i understand, as my Yamaha A1 doesnt seem to have seperate 6:1 input, I wont be able to listen to DVD-A (or SACD)!

MMMM need to another processor on my shopping list.

    Bah, humbug...... :thumbsdow

Has anyone had the chance to compare an old DV27 with a DV27+ ? What was the verdict there?

Oh, and does the DV27A do bass management? If so, how well? And does the addition of the DVD-Audio functions improve CD playback at all?

    Nicolas,

Can't comment on the DV27 as I haven't heard it. The DV27A has bass management crossover frequencies 50-150Hz. It also has audio delay which the Bryston SP1.7 lacks until we get to OS 44. On board DTS/DD decoding.

The setup features are like those found on most AV processors with pink noise to balance the 6 channels.

I have listen to quite a few CD players and this is right up there with players costing £1000.00+. The DVDA playback is better than anything else I have heard.:)

Does that include a Meridian 598 plugged into a 568.2mm via MHR smartlink?

Decoding and bass management? I find myself wondering vaguely whether a DV27A would render my forthcoming Bryston SP1.7 entirely redundant other than as a multi-channel pre-amplifier....

I haven't listened to it playing back DVD-Audio either, but apparently it's rather good - does it the sensible way of passing the signal digitally and then letting the processor do bass management and conversion (which is what it's designed to do).

598DP hooked upto 568.2MM via MHR Smart Link for DVD-A is fantastic.

    John,

The Yamaha DSP A1 (I have one & LOVE it) has six phono input sockets at the bottom of the rear panel next to the optical inputs, marked Main, Surround, Centre and Sub, which are, per the manual, for connecting external decoder, amplifier etc. I am not sure, but might these not do?
