I have recently noticed on Titanic - which is in 2:35 WIDESCREEN - not anamorphic that whenever their are mainly bright white colours that the black borders top & bottom of the screen also get a much lighter shade from being jet black - It's quite annoying and also doesn't look right as it constantly changes through the film depending on the colour scenes.

Now I'm fairly sure I never noticed this before when I had my samsung 709 dvd player. I recently upgraded to the Pioneer 444.
My Tv set is the Panasonic 36PF10.

    Any clues, anyone ?

The solution was to lower the brightness within the service menu set up of the TV .

lowering the brightness from the normal control did not reduce it, but this is excellent now.
