It seems like my sisters laptop has become infected with the 'white screen virus'. Upon bootup it functions properly until the user password screen. After entering the password the screen just goes white, rendering the machine unuseable. Ctrl, alt & delete works but whenever anything like task manager is selected we just get the same white screen. We are able to shut down via the ctrl, alt & delete screen. It is only after telling the machine to shut down that the desktop is displayed, but that's too late as obviously the pc is shutting down.
From searching the net it seems that it's trying to display a fake website, claiming to be from the police that is asking for money (or something to that degree) but, because it's not connected to the internet & the location cannot be determined it just displays a page of pure white.
I have a plan of action that seems easier than a lot of other removal tips& would just like to run it passed you guys to see if it has any chance of success.
I intend to remove the HDD out of it & put the drive into a USB caddy. I then intend to connect it to my laptop, boot that into safe mode & scan with avast. The idea being that avast will pick up the virus & get rid of it, so when the drive is put back in my sisters machine it will work as normal.
I also intend to copy all of the pics (the only data on the system that she cares about) onto mine so if I cannot solve the problem at least she still has them.
If the avast scan doesn't find anything, or cannot get rid of the infection as long as the pics are backed up we will then format & reinstall windows by using the disks I created when I bought my laptop. Both my sisters & my machine were running windows 7, mine has been upgraded to 8 but the restore disks were created when it was running 7.
What do you think?
