I've tried .mwv, .mpg, .mov, .asf, .avi divx xvid and none seem to play.
I'm just trying "PS3 video 9" to convert xvid to PS3
MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)
MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)
Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
ts is interesting.. a lot of stuff that comes off usenet is in ts format.
OTOH divx pretty much *is* mpeg4-sp so it can't be hard to make it play, surely? Probably just needs a little massaging of the data format rather than a reencode.
Is there any equivalent on the Mac? I can do it on a PC but my Mac is a lot faster at encoding.
I think a program called "handbrake" does it
It's interesting that it wont do ac3 in a transport stream and only a program stream. I cap a lot of stuff and the ts has an ac3 pid, which explains why when you copy a ts to have an .mpg extension the video works but not the audio.
Hopefully in the next firmware upgrade they add ac3 and dts support to the transport streams as well and then
I can't seem to get the PS3 to play MPEG-2/AC3 in Program Stream format either. I have some HD Transport Stream files from Usenet and use a program called VideoReDo Plus. This does something to the TS to turn it in to a PS.
Now, these .MPG PS files will play beautifully on the 360 in Dolby Digital 5.1 but the PS3 thinks they are corrupted files.
If I do the same thing (convert TS to PS) using VLC, the PS3 will play them but only in stereo. The AC3 is lost somewhere along the line.
Anybody know what's going on here? Is the PS3 buggered and it can't really play MPEG-2/AC3 PS files or is VideoReDo Plus doing something to the TS and not producing a strictly valid PS?
Cheers for any insights!
You could try asking on the videoredo forums - they're usually quite good at updating for variations in mpeg file formats so know the kinds of things that can go wrong, and how to fix them.
IMO Sony are really going to have to sort this out if the PS3 is going to be taken seriously as a media hub. eg. supporting TS but not TS with AC3? What's that about?
Thanks to everyone for the advice. I am now using PS3 video 9 to convert my video files and its working perfectly.
Thanks once again!
If you are looking to play Divx/XviD files then why not install YDL, saves you having to convert everything as you can just put the files on a DVDr or USB drive and it will play them straight away.
Try 'VisualHub' for OS X.
Hi guys - I downloaded a Spiderman 3 QT 720p trailer - how do I convert this to a PS3 video format with the PSvideo9 program - I am saving on to a usb flash stick.
Please help (You will need to explain as basic as possible as I am pretty useless - with things like this).
If you have Quicktime Pro I believe you can just save the file as a format that the PS3 will playback, .ts or something I dont know.
