In my HCPC I am planning to use a Saphire Radeon 966 non pro graphics card.

As im not intending to use with games, is this over kill?

No, it's not an overkill. I have the same card (I guess you mean Sapphire 9600 non-pro fanless) and I'm thinking of upgrading it. I am moving towards software DVD image processing and rendering using the 3D features of the card and it just doesn't cut it. I'll need more powerful card for FFDShow and HDTV to use the latest VMR9 video renderer.
But if VMR9 and FFDShow don't ring a bell to you, and you'll be using it primarily for DVD (and MPEG4 and WM9), this card is the perfect choice for HTPC right now.
