 Can anyone recommend a good telephoto lens for the Eos 350d? Looking to shoot wildlife in game parks, sneak into the odd gig/footy match. I am very much a novice so don't want to splash out silly money - £200 is my budget.

I use the Sigma 70-300mm Super Macro, it's a nice lens and only around £100 (doubles as a macro lens too). Sigma have just brought out a new DG model for about £120 and an APO DG model for £170. The DG models replace the original that I have and the APO version. The only difference between the standard and the APO version is that the APO version has an extra element of low dispersion glass to reduce chromatic aberation.

you dont want a telephoto at a gig, you want something like a 50mm f1.8 and be right at the front, if not in the pit if you can score it

You get what you pay for, you can't have a jack of all trades, you'll have a master of nothing. Those zooms will be no good in the light available at gigs even if you could a a shot with them, so you can forget that

If you're on a budget get one of the above zooms for outside and the 50mm jamie spoke of for gigs/available light.

Thanks for the advice all. Are the canon's worth considering or am I going to get better results and value from the Sigmas?

The Canon 50mm and the Sigma 70-300mm are different beasts so it's like comparing apples and kumquats. Depends on what you want to do most, I find the 70-300mm great for wildlife, especially because of the 300mm and the macro in one lens, but at a gig you'd probably want something faster with a shorter focal length and the 50mm is a great price.

for gigs i use a 50mm and an 85mm at gigs (still need to get something wider), both f1.8, you'll realise why as soon as you see the complete lack of light!

Sigma 70-300 it is then. Off to Pilanesberg game reserve in a fortnight.
