Question Which Soundbar or Soundbase?

Novice Member
I'm looking to pair my next TV (Samsung or Sony 48-50") with either a soundbar or soundbase ideally. I have been reading through several reviews and think I have come up with a shortlist. Ideally my budget is <£200 but it could stretch to £250 if it would be worth it.

These are currently under consideration:

Philips HTL5140
PHILIPS HTL5140 Soundbar - £179

Yamaha YSP-1400
YAMAHA YSP1400Black Soundbar - £199

Sony HT-XT1
SONY HTXT1 Sound base - £189

Canton DM 50
CANTON DM 50Black Sound base - £199

I am not looking to wall mount the TV, so height is an issue as I would not want it to obscure the TV, which I believe the Yamaha 1400 may do slightly? Having the separate sub is not a problem in terms of space or wiring, however rear speakers are not really convenient. Similarly, I could look at separate bookshelf speakers but would not want to go much above the budget, and would not want them to be too large.

Any views or alternatives that might help?

The canton is by far your best choice with a top build quality and an excellent sound for the money
i have the 100 model and that is truly superb despite the fact it doesn't have the Dolby HD codec
