I'm getting Sky+ HD installed on Sunday. I've heard that the only boxes being offered at the moment are made by Thompson.

Is this true and is the best/most reliable box to get. I have heard people asking for a Samsung, but I don't know why.

    Any ideas or advice please.

I'm not sure there is a definitive answer. There are more complaints on forums about the Thomson box than any others simply because there are more out there.

You will get lovers and haters for each of the boxes. I've had my Thomson box for 16 months and my only problem has been a corrupted viewing card which was replaced speedily and without charge and had nothing to do with the box.

I wouldn't worry too much what you are given - just sit back and enjoy the experience!

As it stands with the demand at the moment I don't think there will be much of an opportunity to choose a box, more just be happy that you can get one in under 4 months.

Don't forget that on forums like this you mainly only hear the ones who have complaints when things go wrong. This is always a very small percentage compared to the tens of thousands that don't have problems.

Think it will be a case of get what you get. It's under warranty for 12 month anyway.

How are you finding the Samsung?
Which EPG version does it come with?

Thomson boxes are worth avoiding (unless you need to use a component connection rather than HDMI). Either Samsung or Pace should do you fine. I'd recommend Pace if you think you might want to upgrade the hard drive.

No Thomsons have been made for months. So any Thomsons going in now will likely be refurbished ones.

Most new installs being reported from what I have seen are Samsung and Amstrad.

Most Paces are sitting on Tesco shelves as part of the deal that seems to have gone a bit gaga!

...but which is the quietest box currently??

I had a Thompson for a weekend, and the hard drive and fan went all weekend, drove me crackers...after it arriving on Friday, I sold it on the Monday!!

You shouldn't get a Thomson box for a new insatll as they lost the contract and haven't been supplying boxes to Sky for quite some time now. However, they are developing a new generation of box and hope to be supplying Sky again in the future. BTW, I work for Thomson, although not the STB division.
