Hi,

I'm now decided on purchasing the following and need a receiver to drive them.

RS5 - Rears (Save me buying stands )
RS8 - Fronts
RSLCR - Centre
RSW12 - Sub

I was thinking of getting the Onkyo 607 but someone mentioned it will sound very bright with the MA RS speakers but i'm not a specialist in this area and a demo will be hard so have to take your word for it and advice.

The Onkyo 607 fits my budget perfectly as a good discount was offered if buying the same time as the speakers.

The Yamaha RX-V1065 was also suggested but then i really exceed my £1500 budget even though the Onkyo does too.

The amp will need to connect a PS3, Sky+ box (not sky hd yet), possibly xbmc (using component), dvd recorder to Samsung 46" 1080p lcd.

I also don't mind buying a second hand one too provided its mint.

Is the 1065 the best choice?

im running a 606 with some b&w 685's ect and they work very well together, i would actually imagine the onkyo will suit the ma speakers even better as they are not as bassy as the b&w's:thumbsup:

Obviously the yamaha amps are awesome, they always have been good, but i doubt there would be much betwen them tbh:)

The RS's not as bassy as the B&w's. I thought the RS's were very bassy.

I think that was me!

I notice that you're currently running a Denon amp with Mordaunt Short speakers. The MS speakers have a similar tonal brightness to the MA speakers i.e. they're both regarded as bright speakers. The Yamaha has a similar tonal warm sound as the Denon. Therefore tonal sound wise, pairing the Yamaha 1065 with the MA speakers will produce a similar tonal sound to your current system --- but the quality will be much better. So if you're happy with the place your current system sits on the 'bright to warm' scale, the Yamaha will be a good choice. The Onkyo will shift it towards the bright side.

The Denon 2310 would be a good match, but it is £700. The Yamaha 1065 is the equivalent in the Yamaha range, and just happens to be at the bargain price of £509 ATM.

Listen to the equivalent B&W's ;)

They are much warmer sounding also, not that im saying they are better, depends on your preference, the RS's are more natural sounding imo:thumbsup:

TBH, i hate the current sound of my denon 3805\MS Genies when playing music but for movies, they are great. For music, they sound very tinny but i guess you get that with lifestyle speakers. I have these setup in my bedroom atm and i'm not using the best cabling and the acoustics are very bad. Lots of furniture, carpet, clothes, curtains which absorb sound. They are connected using Belkin pro speaker cable  which could be the issue. I also find a big chunk of the frequencies missing between the sats and sub.

For the MA RS's, I now gearing towards the yamaha atm because it' a newer amp, full hd 1080p, usb, optional ipod dock but it doesn't have any svideo inputs  so how shall i connect my sky+ box, use phono and optical?

I know the price is more but wth now. I need the system to sound warm as well as i love bass and hoping the rs8 and rsw12 sub will suffice.

Also, will the B&w 685 Theatre package be much warmer ie bassy than the above MA RS's package which includes the RS8's?

You're right re the sub sat aystem. I got the MS premier system and immediately upgraded the fronts to 906s. However the sats weren't as bad with music as you describe. What have you got the crossover set at? The sats only go down as far as 100hz (on my premieres at least) and you need to set the crossover to the lowest frequency that your sats will do.

With regard to Sky+ for the best picture quality, conect it to the TV via scart abd set the sky box to output RGB. Then run a optical cable from the sky box to the amp.

just connect it up via optical:thumbsup:

i may be selling my 606 very soon if this is of any interest? thinking about upgrading to one of the new pioneer units, to match the kuro and pio bluray player:cool:

Hi,

I'm now decided on purchasing the following and need a receiver to drive them.

RS5 - Rears (Save me buying stands )
RS8 - Fronts
RSLCR - Centre
RSW12 - Sub

I wouls reconsider your choice of sub. Check the sub woofer/tactile transducer section of the forum as you'll find that BK/SVS will be a better investment than the MA sub. Sub woofers produce omnidirectional waves and can be integrated tonally into any system unlike matching front speakers and centre speaker which ideally need to be the same make/range.

Just a suggestion!:smashin:

Tastes obviously differ, but I'm running the RS8a with a Yamaha 1900 and I wouldn't want it any brighter --- the top end is clean and crisp ---the kind of brightness that you want.

The base is also clean and punchy. It's currently running with the MS 309 sub. The RS8s handle base well and so a sub should augment the base rather than take over.

The sound improvment over my Mordaunt Short speakers is dramatic.

It could well be the frequency setup on the amp as I recall i was scared of blowing the sats (but then i managed to blow one of the tweeters on the fronts so put that one as a rear and can't tell it's blown). I got a replacement tweeter but not installed it. But it could well be the crossover on the amp. i will check it. :smashin:

i was planning of wall mounting the lcd so will not be able to use scart at the back of the TV so everything will have to go via the receiver and one hdmi cable going to the TV.

rino2k, you've got me thinking now too. With the b&w 685 theatre package being the same price and warmer ie bassy than the above MA RS's package i've chosen which includes the RS8's, am i better of going for the b&w's.

I did initially consider them and wanted them but i would then have to buy speaker stands which works our more than the MA RS's which includes all floor standers and saves me buying stands.

I just want the right setup after spending all this money.

What i can conclude from all this now is

Setup 1

B&W 685s, 686s, HTM62, ASW608 (theatre) + Onkyo 607 = Warm Sound ie bassy

whereas

Setup 2

MA RS8s, RS5s, RSLCR, RSW12 + Yamaha RX-V1065 = Brighter and natural

I guess both systems will cost around the same as the extra cost of the Yamaha could buy me the stands for setup 1.

What would you do?

B&W speakers are also regarded as bright speakers and are more commonly paired with Yamaha/Denon amps. I personally think you're headind down the wrong track with either of these speakers and the lower range Onkyos -606/607 Just my opinion.

From reading and using the search function, with the Yamaha RX-V1065, you getting a lot for the money and the price may go up so i really ought to grab it.

Just the speakers is the issue and i've reserved the MA's which i really want to be happy with.

Hi Mate, pop into your nearest sevenoaks as they will have both the b&w's and MA's on demo, i cant see you being dissapointed with your initial choice though.

It's more for music why i mention the b&w's being bassy, if you like R&B/Rap/Dance ect the b&w setup really is worth considering, then again i demo'd the RS8's with a high end stereo amp and they were awesome, plenty of bass when needed:D

I've bought the MA's in the end.

Just wondering if i buy a cheapo amp to run my Genies and use my Denon 3805 to power the MA's.

Then i would leave anything connected to the Tv and then use the optical out on the TV to connect to the Denon for the sound.

Monitor Audio have a relatively clinical nature and are therefore best suited to amplifiers with a warm approach. The speakers are best suited to amps by the likes of Denon, Marantz and Yamaha (to name but a few).

I'll be getting the Yamaha RX-V1065. :smashin:

I'd be cautious of some of the recommendations given in that thread. After briefly viewing some of the posts, I did notice some amps listed that I'd advise against using with Monitor Audio speakers.

Thanks Dante, I am just a newbie in this field, but even after a few demos, and reading through the posts there, I concur with you :smashin:

Having listened to many combinations of speaker demos, I am fairly confident with the RX6 fronts, RX-centre, RX1 rears, PV1 sub (surprisingly for me, it sounded awesone with the RX they just seem to work together effortlessly, especially for music)

Not sure about the amps yet, but this thread was immensely helpful in narrowing down my choices:

So I am now down to a shortlist of:
- Yamaha 1065 or 1900
- Denon 2310 (or?)
- Marantz (unsure)
- Pioneer (unsure)
- Onkyo (unsure)

Any other brands you'd recommend for that would be worth do demo with the RX IYO?
Gracias.

Nb, any opinion on the new Carat A57 is it anywhre near as good as its looks:)
