Thinking about moving into the seperate processor and amplifiers area but unsure about what i should be looking at.

I will be going 7.1 and so need the amplification and processor power to do this but what equipment is recommended by the more knowledgeable people out there?

That's the big question and i'm really not sure so say £1000-£1500. I know this won't buy the best but i'm just after something decent which is better than buying a midrange receiver.

At that price range you may well find a really good receiver from Denon/Pioneer etc will give you a better buy than trying to put together a relatively low-end separates system, unless you're prepared to look on the used/ex-dem sites and ebay.

Being honest,I think you'd need to stretch to at least £2k before starting to look at a full separates system...and even then...

You should be able to get a used Lexicon DC1 or 2 plus Rotel power amp for that sort of money.

Yes, i don't mind going second hand and there's usually plenty for sale in the classifieds forum.

I really just need to know what equipment to look out for.

You should be looking at £600ish for a DC1 upto £750-£800 for a DC2. You'd want version 4 software on both which gives you DD & DTS EX and improved Logic 7. There's a DC1 on ebay at the minute which looks like it could go quite cheap.

You can pick up the Rotel RB985 5ch THX amp for £300-£350 or the RMB 1075 for £550ish second hand and there's always a few older 2ch Rotel power amps available on ebay quite cheaply for 7.1 surround purposes.

Thanks for the help, at least i know what to look out for now.

Could i also buy a processor and three 2 channel power amps to give me 6.1 including my sub?

I haven't considered going this route until recently so i've got things to learn.

You should be able to do that as the rear channels are mono on DD & DTS EX (not sure on Logic 7). The user manuals on the Lexicon website are pretty well explained and should tell you if it'll do what you need it to.
