I am torn between 2 playera at the moment - The Philips DVP720SA (£70 from Amazon), and the DVD963SA (£120 from Play.com). I will be connecting them via RGB scart to a CRT tv and using a CA 540R receiver. I will be using the player at least as much for CD as DVD.

I was also condiering the CA 540D. This was mainly due to my receiver being the CA.

Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

as far as I can tell, 963 is a better solution for music reproduction, or audio if you like. it is reported as a fine choice for replay of standard audio CDs as well as SACD. on the other hand, 720 will play Divx, but no SACD, so it's up to your priorities to decide.

but, both are a little bit old models and take this into account.

    It does play SACD. ;)
It also does CD upsampling, which is supposed to improve the sound. :)
