    Hi all,

I am looking into spending upto £600 on a new DVD player which must be PAL/NTSC progressive to feed my Panny 5 series plasma.

I am getting a little confused on what player to buy there seem to be several in the running:

    Denon 2200

    Sony 930

    Pioneer 757/668

    Harmon Kardon 25/30

    Any advice?

I am interested only in the best picture and sound quality - not worried about DVD-A and SACD.

Also I am extremely concerned about lip sync with the plasma ans whether any of these players have this problem.

    Thanks

    Mark

If you are considering the Sony 930 and you are not interested in SACD then you may want to consider the Sony 730 instead for about £100 less. Other forum members have reported that pictuire quality is exactly the same as the 930 as it has the same video components.

You may also want to consider the Denon 770SD - list price £250. PAL ps like the 2200 but no SACD or DVDA.

Also may want to consider the HK 2550 - apparently the same as the 25 but in silver. Just £250 at this site:

I go back on what I orignally said about the 730 - the picture isn't *exactly* the same as the 930, but the difference is negligible.

    Mark,

I usually hesitate to recommend our products directly in a discussion forum but I shall break my rule today! You might want to take a look at (and listen to) the new Arcam DV78, which would seem to meet your needs very well and is close to your budget.

There is more information on the Arcam website at http://www.arcam.co.uk/diva/cinema/dv78.html

The unit is available in silver or black and is shipping to dealers right now.

    HTH.

Thanks the 78 looks interesting, but what price is it retailing at?

Also does it compensate for the audio delay due to the production of the progressive picture which I believe takes around 60ms to do?

    Regards

    Mark

Mark - the suggested UK retail price is £699 inc VAT.

All Arcam DVD players have proper audio delay management when used in progressive mode, to compensate for the inherent video processing delays, so there is no need to worry there.

    Hi all. :)

John, just out of curiosity, why does the DV78 feature in the "Discontinued Products" section of your site?

The new Cambridge Audio Azur 540D looks interesting. The spec is similar to the Arcam DV78 i.e. six 12bit/54MHz dacs on the video stage and 12bit/192KHz dac on the audio along with a damped chassis, pal/ntsc ps, DVD-A etc. The US price appears to be about $350 and it should be available through RS soon.

If it performs as well as its CD counterpart (Azur 540C) has done in reviews, it should be a good one.
