After an hour or so of searching as a complete noob I came up with the following choices of camcorder under £200.

Im looking for a compact unit with good quality video. Im not interested in effects, digital zoom, bells and whistles etc

These seemed to be reasonable but there are so many.
Cany anyone recommend which one I should buy? Other alternatives welome.
    thanks.

    JVC - GR-D290 - £180
    JVC - GR-D390 - £240
    JVC - GR-D340 - £150

    Sony - DCR-HC35 - £200

Canon - 2 mpix but cat remember model

    Samsung - VPD363/EXU - £180

    Thanks.
The JVC GR-D290 gets good reviews and has an AV input for helmet cams etc. I know its quite dated though so Im thinking there must have been a quality improvement since they came out? Although if they were mid to high end then they will still be very good. That leads me to the later gr-d390 but Ive also heard that canon video quality is excellent around the 200quid mark.

    Decisions decisions.

Do you have any advice on where to buy? Theres offers on the net but are there any stores that know enough about these things to be able to give impartial advice on the high street?

If you want AV-in, yes the D290 has it, but neither the 340 or 390 does.

Canon MV960 has AV-in, available for around £235.

Advice on the high street? It is hit and miss. Jessops match some web prices, and sometimes you can get good advice... it depends on the individual you talk to.
