Well just made a serious hole in the savings account and bought myself a Pioneer KRP600A. Been using a PS3 up until now for Blu-ray duties but I think its time to have a dedicated machine.
I've not had time to keep up with the best models etc so what do you guys recommend. I don't have a big budget as my savings are almost nothing now.

How much were you thinking of spending if you don't mind me asking? :)

Can recommend the S350 as a great little machine, not too pricey either :)

I'd say about £300ish but would flex the plastic a bit more if need be.

    Is that a Sony?

Wow I'm not use to shelling out so little.
I spotted Richer Sounds doing these for £140 a little while ago but didn't think it could be up to much.
Is there anything else I should look at as I feel guilty sticking a £140 player on a plasma this expensive? :D

There's Panasonic but still a low price :) or you could go higher and look at the Pioneer?
51's popular or maybe the new model.....320?

Anything from Panasonic, Pioneer, or Sony is sure to please.

A Pioneer Bluray will work well with your TV, ie you can add the remote code to your TV remote, and you could even put it in a cupboard and the TV will pass remote signals to it via HDMI Control. BDP-51FD probably has the best PQ & SQ for the money, but lacks BD-Live (Blurays internet interactive content).

Panasonic's latest (BD60 & 80) offer nice funky features where you not only get BD-Live (nothing special, atm), but on top of that you get You tube & Picasso (online photo sharing) via panasonic's Viera Cast. They also have USB. So it's pretty forward thinking. They have good PQ & SQ, but not as good as Pioneer, and is a bit cheap looking.

Sony's budget players are good performers, also. Have BD-Live. S550 has 1GB of on board storage to save content. Menus are particularly nice and quick to get around, with a PS3 style look.

To be honest if you paid £300 for the Sony you would still be pleased; it's a great little player & picture quality will not disappoint regardless of it's price.:)

Getting my S350 tomorrow! Can't wait to get it all connected up and watch my first Blu Ray disc! Why do I have a feeling work will drag tomorrow? :D

    Wow too many choices.
The new Pioneers look an interesting purchase but wonder if it would be an idea to wait a while the prices settle as there is probably going to be a premium as they are new models.

If you wait - you'll never buy one :D

The Pioneer has stunning PQ and SQ... it just lacks the Profile 2.0 - something that is of no concern for me!

You could buy either the Pioneer or Panasonic now, wait for new ones to come out and probably lose very little on resale... but at least have BR now :)

I'm too in a similar positon, I've the Pio 500a and still using the PS3, I also don't like the idea of using a "Cheapish" player, I won't have a sound system so don't really want to pay the extra on something I won't take advantage of, just want to play Blu's with the best possible PQ and that's it, no interest in viewing Pics or any of the other gimmicky stuff, was looking at the 51FD, or perhaps the up and coming BDP-LX52, I still really don't have a clue on what I want.

For sensible money and for the features you want, you won't go far wrong at all with 51fd, certainly not at the price it is at the moment!

I've been thinking about a blu-ray player for a while.

Is it worth getting one over using a PS3?

    Thanks :)

Might be a benefit on the audio side :smashin: nearly everyone says there's an upgrade when moving to bitstream HD audio. :)

I have just bought a Samsung 40"B650 and now wish to buy a blue ray player, can anyone recommend one for about £150. I have stumbled upon an article on pdadvisor which suggests updating your laptop may be a better answer than purchasing a standalone blue-ray player, is this true?...

Many thanks for your help in advance:)
