    Hi all,

Following advice and help from this forum I purchased a ECS P4M800PRO-M (V2.0) mobo for a HTPC project I was tinkering with. Nice mobo; supports my Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 and seems stable!

However I've just found out from ECS that this mobo does not support full S3(STR) standby:eek:!!
I want to put my system into full standby (fans off) with my MCE remote!

Can anyone recommend a mobo that supports S3(STR) with Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 support and an AGP slot for my Radeon 16500 AGP gfx card? (oh it has to be microATX to fit in the Antec Fusion case I'm thinking of getting!!!)

To be honest - I could at a stretch do without the AGP slot if it makes things easier:D.

You may want to look at SpeedFan - a free piece of software that allows you to change fan speed based on temperature of CPU, northbridge, etc. May save you shelling out on a new mobo.

Craigd - thanks for the reply.
Just to clarify; it's the PSU fan that doesn't switch off in standby as the P4M800PRO-M (V2.0) doesn't have full suspend to RAM function (unlike my laptop!) and so in stand-by the PSU fan still keeps a hummin'!!
    Will/could SpeedFan cure this?

If not - anyone else can help with new mobo??

Only if mobo and PSU support it - I bought a fanless PSU which is great if you PC is lower power consumption (I have a laptop CPU, 2 HDDS, 2 PCI tuners, 1 DVD rom and use on board graphics). It was about £90

What Intel Core 2 Duo supported mAXT mobo is everyone else using????

I'd expect not supporting S3 fully is the exception rather than the rule... I'm using an Intel DG965OT. Not the cheapest board by a stretch, and not very versatile for overclockers. However...it does include onboard X3000 graphics to which you can add DVI to the standard VGA via an ~£8 ADD2 card. Stable and, as you'd expect from Intel, frequent BIOS updates. Oh...supports suspend/wake from S3 properly along with Intel Quick Resume (although I find the later pretty pointless). Quite a popular board amongst HTPC builders, although I suspect that there's more functionality about for less now.

    jon_c0, Thanks for the heads-up!

This certainly looks like a good mobo & would fulfill my needs - unfortunately Dabs.com is out of stock!!!

Sorry to be a pain - I've found one on Amazon a a good price & wanted to check - when you say supports S3 (STR) properly, do you mean that when entering standby everything is off, including PSU fans? If so, gonna get one!!!

    Thanks

Yep, that's what S3 is :) . Visibly and audibly everything is off, hard disk, all fans etc case+motherboard - a true standy/STR that can be awoken by keyboard/mouse/remote (providing you use this patch in XP, if they are USB, but that seems pretty common). I'm reasonably sure most recent motherboards are now pretty reliable in this respect...sounds like you might have been unlucky with your original one.

I was thinking about a Intel DG965OT... In an Antek Fusion case.

Can anyone recomend a good (queit) heatsink for a E6660?

To be honest, I can hardly hear the heatsink and fan that came with my retail pack E6400. If your E6660 comes with one too, I'd give it a spin (pun intended) first...

There are problems with S3 in Vista though, so be warned!

Good heatsink, lotsa options, all the Zalman high-end very good, fair bit of room, but again not really needed in the antec case, stock heatsink on c2d run cool and quiet, what they were designed to be!

Oh, good point, sorry! Not wishing to be misleading I probably ought to have made it clear that my positive S3 sleep/wake experiences are with XP MCE, and I haven't any experience of Vista.
