    Hi,

After months of reading the forum but never being signed up to post I felt it was about time to register so I could tap into the huge knowledge base that is on here!

Right first off let me appologise at how many questions I am about to ask! (Damn noobs!)

    Here is the scenario....

I am currently using a 15" CRT Toshbia that I have had for over 7 years! So its time to upgrade!
I am a student living in a rental house on a new housing estate so I dont intend to start measuring the room for perfect accoustics. Now do I have the funds to afford a surround sound system! But I do have a dennon mini hi-fi unit which I could run the sound through.

the main reason I am purchasing a HD TV is to use my xbox 360 through it. Now I know the TV only goes up to 1080i, what does the xbox go up to? Is it game dependent or are we waiting for a HDMI Lead for it?

Do the bravias have a 'game mode' like the samsungs?

I also want to link my laptop up to the TV so I can watch TV shows and films though it (I have 189GB of TV sows backed up and around 100gb films!)
how do I check to see if my laptop will display on it?
    My laptop is a Compaq R4000 series with 15.4" with a resolution of 1280 x 800.
GFX card is a ATI mobility Radeon Xpress 200 series.

I was looking at two models. The first being the 32" Samsung R74 and the 2nd being the Sony 32S2510U. Or the 32S2530U

I have seen the sony here: http://www.digitaldirectuk.com/products_moreinfo3/index.asp?product_id=12395
    For only £512.01

And the other sony for the same price
    http://www.digitaldirectuk.com/products_moreinfo3/index.asp?product_id=12396

    how future proof are they?
    How reliable are they?

Now which one is best suited for my needs?!

Many many thanks in advance for your time

EDIT - I want it to be good on SD broadcasts aswell! How good is the built in freeview menu system on the units I mentioned? how well do they deal with SD broadcasts?

Hi mate. Just wondering if you needed a 32" set or would a 26" be enough. I have one of these sets in the bedroom at the moment and am using it as tv,pc monitor and hdtv for the xbox360/PS3.

    review here:

Dont know its the size youre looking for but its a great set for the price.

I was wondering about getting a 32" (instead of a 26") but I measured the width of my TV stand and a 26" would only just fit on it.

Game modes actually make the experience worse and sometimes causes buzzing. Dont get a sammy just for that.

But yeah get a sammy 26" it has:

    Great contrast ratio
    Superb sharpness and clearness
    Bright
    Sleek

    but...

    The sound is supposedly tinny
and the game mode is cack

    But get it!

Whatever you do, don't buy it from Comet - it's over £100 more expensive than at other places.

I assume I need 1:1 pixel mapping if I am to use my laptop on it succesfully?

Which as far as I am aware the sammy does not do?

Is there any length restriction on VGA leads? Beacuse I might have to run it to the other side of the room.

Right I think I have decided on a 32" set.

Now I have to choose which one!!

So far I think the Sammy R74 is winning beacuse you can get it pretty cheap from here:
    http://www.beyondtelevision.co.uk/thisProduct.asp?ID=686

But some others I have found are...

    Philips
    http://www.play.com/Electronics/Ele...eview-HD-Ready-Widescreen-LCD-TV/Product.html

    Sony Bravia
    http://www.digitaldirectuk.com/products_moreinfo3/index.asp?product_id=10972&ff=&ffi=

I really dont know which one too choose!

Main use will be xbox and acting as a film screen for my laptop (watching films through the TV) So will have to have a VGA input.

    Please help

    EDIT
If you post up a suggestion could you also post up why you have suggested it? would help me work out why certain brands are better than others
    Cheers :D
