Can anyone advise a suitable laptop for talking to my AV32DP via the TAGtronic programming cable?

My IBM Thinkpad won't do it but the desk top will.

I want to get a Dell lap top and am interested to know if anyone has managed it.

    :lease:

any computer with a serial port will work

and the usb port to a Serial adaptor also work you just need to make sure the usb adaptor is fully compliant

some others on here maybe able to quote makes of adaptor as my one is unbranded

If you really want to be on the safe side take any USB/Serial converter based on FTDI chip.

I found out this myself at work since we use quite complicated application that requires maximum out of USB/Serial converter, just to read afterwards on HP homepage and on DVDO homepage that they strongly recomend FTDI chips since they implemeted all possible features of Serial communication into their conversion. Simple!

Thanks for this. How can I tell that an adaptor uses the FTDI chip. I bought a converter (unspecified make - I ve got rid of it) and it did not work :( .

well, this is simple computer story.
    befoe buying:
some retailer will state this, others won't. still, normally you can download the driver and check what's written in the inf file (text file) from the driver.
if you already have the converter either open it and check the chip or install it and take a look onto driver details in the device manager.

    Hello Jonathanh,
just a few hours ago I made an backup of my AV32R DP settings with my IBM R40 notebook. First problems with the original Tag software were solved after downloading and using Audiolab's User Settings Setup. Perhaps this helps, good luck !
How could you consider to give up your IBM and get a Dell notebook ? That's like giving away your AV32DP and buy a Sony... (sorry, off-topic...)

    Problem sorted.

I bought a new serial converter and reallocated the COM port as the computer had chosen COM5 (The lap top is set up for use with a docking station at work).

Everything working fine. Thanks for your help
