    Sorry, found it: -

    Hi all

If you would like to get online during an outage or before you go live, please follow the below instructions:

    1. Go to Control Panel
    2. Go to Network connections – new connection wizard – next
    3. Connect to the internet
    4. Set up connection manually
    5. Connect using a dial up modem
    6. ISP name Be – next
    7. Dial up number - 0845xxxxxxx (this is charged by your phone provider)
    8. Enter : member [email protected] - member ID is the id of the member they are using in the Avatar member login
    9. No password
    10. Primary DNS : 194.111.32.1
    11. Secondary DNS : 194.111.32.13
    12. Finish

So how much will that cost? Sounds expensive :rotfl:

Same as any local phone call would normally cost you.

No, 0845 numbers are excluded. I would think just from looking at that chart that the costs for you would be between 3p & 5 1/2p per minute. Not sure about this though.

I decided to stick this as it is very helpful to all. Maybe everyone can vote and we can get a true total of which company is the most used.

If you can get BE at your local exchange, it's highly recommended by me!

But then, I do get the full 24mb download and 1.3mb upload by BEing so close. God damn it's quick... :D

    why ?

I'm with Tiscali and I'm convinced they are limiting my bandwidth somehow. I don't understand much about how ISP's work but it sure can't be my PC limiting anything as I have 2Gb memory and a 3Ghz CPU and yet it takes 15-20 seconds to load 8 tabs in Firefox ?

please can someone convince me to move from Tiscali.

Well here are 5 speedtests, from www.speedtest.net, using my Be Unlimited connection:

Note by the time, they have all been run consecutively right before I posted this, just so you know I haven't picked my 5 best results ever...

How about that to convince you to move? :D

Oh and I have just found yet another reason to move over to Be, assuming you can get it of course...

They are offering £55 cash back, if you use Quidco.com! See:

    How about O2?

Same network as Be (they own Be :smashin:) but cheaper prices.

Due to line length i can only get 8Mb package but for £7.50!!

:D Moved now  To ADSL24 - the customer service there is what impresses me most.

Throttling is just...indescribable (in the bad way). Customer service is shocking, and...my ping...

Online gaming is basically impossible (especially in fast moving games that rely on receiving other people's controls, such as Call of Duty, or Resistance - less so on things like Guitar Hero, or Skate.).

It's a far cry from my new ISP.

serious troubles with Tiscali after being with them years. So stressed tonight I could have cried at the frustration of it all.
    Deep breath.
which would you say was the best between Sky and BE ?
The max connection speed I can get on my exchange is 3M so not many good BB options available for me.

seems I can't get BE in my area and although I already have Sky+ I would have to pay an extra £17 month for a basic 8mb Sky broadband connect ? is that right ? seems a lot compared to others.

Unfortunatley, your local exchange has to be Local Loop Unbundled (LLU) upgraded for either BE or Sky to get the faster speeds. You may well find the Sky 8mb connection is no better than the Tiscali connection, speed wise sadly. :(

Seems like Be is the one to be with at the moment then?

Is migrating before I go on holiday a good idea? (So while I'm on holiday It will fill the 1 - 3 weeks time to change over!)

I'm on IDNET, not the fastest due to me being a long way cable-wise from the exchange, but customer service is amazing...properley amazing.

I would say that was a good idea, but obviously you have to be available to sign for your 'Be Box' modem when that arrives on your doorstep...

    Here's my vote...

Virgin/Blueyonder - Top Marks, although i would like a static IP :smashin:

Demon - Was just ok, Price was good, Support and billing are not great.

Fasthosts - Expensive, but i had no problems.

BT Business - Current ISP, Best line rate ever, 1.9mbs compared to 1.3mb with Demon.

I have switched to BT knowing they are more expensive but in doing so I have the best line rate ever, and if I call the ISP for support they cant fob me off saying "Contact BT" of which BT then say "Speak to your ISP, we cant help".

Very impressed with UK Online. Told me I would get about 13meg, I get over 15meg and I'm not exactly on top of the exchange. Support is generally very good and there don't appear to be any limits or shaping of any kind. Very pleased, especially in the rural town that I live in.

    Cheers!! :smashin:

What distance from my local exchange do you guys think is too far for me to get good/max speed out of my bb connection? I'm thinking of going with Be after looking at this thread. Ive been with V/Media for years but it's got really bad lately, very slow..

    edit....
Just looked at my local exchange and Be is good to go. I live within a mile of my local exchange.

I'm 480m away from my local exchange according to the mapping feature on www.SamKnows.com, I think that might be why I get the full 24mb download speed with Be... :rotfl:

Is Be my best bet and are they fully unlimited?

I'm 884m from my exchange and I'm currently with Bulldog with 8meg. This is fully unlimited, I can download to my hearts content and always get full speed. I've never had any downtime either and have been at my current address for about 2.5 years.

However, bulldog were sold to pipex some time ago but I have now received a letter to say they'll be moving bulldog customers onto pipex accounts and therefore their terms and conditions. I've not heard good things about pipex and don't know about their fair usage policy etc. I want a fully unlimited connection and Be is available in my area so am leaning towards them. The samknows site says they still have a fair usage policy though.

Is this just to cover them for extreme cases or are they ruthless (I can never understand offering super-fast speeds and then having a limit as you are going to get to the limit quick if you are an active user).

I (legally) download a lot of music and movies and also from ftp sites - I'm a photographer. I upload a bit too but it's not a big deal as I generally upload at work. Anyway, I can download anything from 20GB to 100GB a month and want to know what the best option is? Looking to pay around £25 and don't mind an unlimited 8 meg as opposed to a limited 24meg. Wouldn't mind a speed boost though ;)

Oh, I'm also an 02 customer which offers a slight saving - are their deals the same as you get from Be or do they differ somehow? I don't mind paying extra to go with Be - my mobile contract is up in 6 months and if O2 don't offer the phone I want next (Xperia) then I'll be looking to move so perhaps directly with Be is best.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I moved away from Pipex a couple of years ago as they were throttling my torrents. Moved to Be and had no problems, plus running at the full 24MB! For £18 you cant go wrong, and upload speeds are quicker too.

I would hazard a guess Pipex are still at it, apart from that seemed a reasonable service.

Do you download a lot? I assume there's BT line rental of £10.50 on top?
