Picard has an innate authority that the others lack on a consistent basis. Sisko gets there towards the end of DS9.

Kirk is an interstellar playboy with too quick a temper.

Janeway is good - but only good.

Archer - ? Haven't really watched Enterprise since the start of the first season so can't comment - but know he won't match up to JLP.

    James T Kirk!!

For TNG they needed two characters to do the role that JTK had.

Riker and Picard together = Kirk

    You're obviously from Liverpool:laugh:

JLP is definitely best overall and could actually act under a number of demands, which is helpful. Kirk had his cheeky chappie humour to help him out but that's about it - oh and untold bints.

Kirk is the original and the best. He could dish out a good beating on a regular basis.

Jean Luc was a bit of a wuss, too much the diplomat at times.
I cannot comment on the others since I haven't seen enough of the shows

Got to go for Picard too, I'm afraid. Not only is Patrick Stewart easily the best actor to hold down a leading role in any ST series, Picard was also the only one to ever convince me that he was really someone responsible enough to be placed in charge of a star ship.

Mind you, given the type of person who actually does end up becoming a high-ranking officer in the american military, Picard may be the least plausible. :)

The one thing that was wrong with Patrick Stewart, of course, is that he really isn't very French. Picard spends the whole of the first season of TNG going on and on about being French, but I never bought that for a second. The relationship between Picard and Riker, in particular, always struck me as being a perfect encapsulation of a sober, sensible British captain dealing with a hot-headed american first officer. :)

 I posted the question and don’t know which one to vote for. I do not know if to vote which one was the best to serve under or who was the best guy or gal to see the mission through.
