I have been looking for a DVD recorder for a while now and still cannot find one that suits my needs within my budget of £350, and I wondered if somebody could suggest one? My requirements are, a builtin Hard Drive for editting, Scart RGB in/Out, 16:9 recording to HDD and DVD-R or RW, S-Video In on the front or back for transferring from a camcorder (which is a DV camera but the DV connection doesn't work!!) Composite In on the back (not essential) for transferring from VHS, and the most important one, to be able to read DVD-R and +R media as I have quite a few of both and the +R discs have the DVD+R book type, although I have just found out how to change it on my PC DVD Writer so any new discs I make will have the DVD-ROM book type.

    Thanks

    Martin.

The Sony HX900 will read and write both + and -; though it is over your budget. It also lacks some editing functions, though the quality is reported to be excellent.

As you know the Toshiba won't touch a +R if the book type says it is +R. I'm not sure if the Pany E85 or the Pioneer 520 will read a +R disc? From their manuals it doesn't look like it.

Pioneer recorders do read +R discs, although they are not "oficially" suported.

I've tried a few (I do mean a few) and they all played fine in Pioneer 5100.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies, does the Pan E85 play DVD+R with the DVD+R book type or do they have to have a DVD-ROM book type?

    Thanks

    Martin.

My E55 plays +R (and +RW) without bitsetting. Doubt if the E85 is any different (though maybe an owner can confirm).
