what is your budget ? me and a few other could start reccomending diff cards all day ! also i think Ram is really letting you down badly. half life 2 will barly run IMO on 256mb of Ram! i doubt with the specs you have HL2 will run at full potential at all, but it will be ok! so lets know the budget and go from there

Ps the vaio you have isnt a laptop is it ??

Graphics cards can range in price from about £20 to around £400 for the best available. Ram is fairly cheap at the moment so I'd invest in another 256MB stick AT LEAST.
We really need a budget available to give you the best option for the price your prepared to pay. We will also need about more information about your system. What motherboard does it have (does it have an agp slot), what speed ram is your current 256mb ram? and what graphics are you currently using?

Where are the new PCI-X cards placed in the heirachy? Dell has x300 installed in the flagship XPS series (apparently tuned gaming machine). It has x800 for +£250. What is the speed compared to ATI radeon 9800/ pro??

The X300 (SE) is intended to be comparable to the 9200 (SE). Moreover, the X600 Pro/XT rivals the 9600 Pro/XT. Finally, the X800 Pro/XT rivals the 9800 Pro/XT but, by far, outpaces it.

For around ~£180, you could pick-up a 9800 Pro 256MB, but take into account the fact that PCI Express cards are making their arrivals. ATi intend in producing two individual variants of their cards: for AGP 8x and x16 PCI Express. nVidia, by contrast, is producing just one variant of their cards, by their HSI bridge solution, which acts as an adapter.

Pretty well - you could easily manage 1024x768 with decent quality settings or 1280x1024 with mild settings.
