May be a silly question but which eye do you use to look through the viewfinder. (Nothing technical just a preference).

I prefer using my Left Eye.

    Just a light hearted query.

Go on are you a lefty or a righty? :D

    Results so far.

20 people looked at thread and answered the question, the break down:

    Left Eye - 8
    Right Eye - 12

Well, I was a lefty, but since moving away from the compact cameras to ones with more of an SLR body shape, I find nose/right hand get in each others way. So I've had to become a righty just so I can hold the camera comfortably and reach the buttons without hinderance.

Interesting question, and one I was discussing with some photographer friends last week.

    Right eye for me.

But then I eat with fork in my right hand, ride surf/skateboards goofy footed and wear my watch on my right hand.

    It's me Lefty.

Somehow I don't squint when using my Left Eye, honestly it's more relaxing and eye(sorry 'I') have less eye strain!

I wonder what a professional's take on this query would be!?

Convention dictates the use of your right eye when using a cameras viewfinder, if anything I am unconventional!

A little trick for you to try:

Look at something smallish and then remember what it is. With your index finger and thumb of both hands make a right angle and then bring both together to make a square about 1" on each side. Then with both eyes open look at a specific part of your object (say for instance the AV part of the AVForums logo at the top of this page) and quickly bring your [square] hands up at arms legnth to frame the part of the object you are looking at.

Now if you close each eye you should find that for one eye the object will be inside the box (this is the strong eye) and for the other it won't be inside the box (or will be off centre etc)

For me I personally use the left eye even though every camera I have encountered seems to be for right eyed people... Oh yeah and I'm right handed!

One eye is dominant ( the 'master eye'). It is not linked to whether you're right or left-handed.
A slightly simpler version of Alleymac's trick is to pick out a specific mark or feature on the far side of the room and looking at it with both eyes open point at it. Now close first one eye, then the other. With your 'master eye' open your finger will still be in line with whatever you're pointing at. With the other your finger will appear to jump out of line.

Great Test, it works, boy do I feel vindicated in my Left Eye choice!

I look a bit like this using my DSLR, nice and relaxed. ! :)

I wonder how many people are using their weaker eye to take photo's without knowing it may be the wrong one for them!

I would have thought that people would naturally choose the correct (read: strongest) eye without thinking about it. I can't even think which eye I use as it's just a natural reaction for me. I might try using my weaker eye and see what it does to the composition of my images.

So are you a Left or Right eye photographer!

Just a point of note, I wonder if there is a propensity for left or right eye use in the photographic community.

From such a simple question there may be some scientific reasoning, maybe I'll check Google...no I must stop this line of query before it gets out of hand.

    Right eye (I think)

I had to check this picture first as I don't have my camera with me, then I got all confused as it's a mirror image

Yeah, right eye for me :)

Looks like I'm right-eye dominant when doing the tests, but I can't remember for the life of me which eye I use through the viewfinder :rotfl:

Surprisingly I do not need to squint or close the other eye when using my Left Eye to look through the viewfinder!

    Anyone else find this?!

Just a small point after viewing stevegreen's pic.

my strongest eye is my left Eye, but my hooter is so big i cant get close to the viewfinder which is on the left side of the camera and leaves a smudge on the screen so i have to use my right eye:(

Have you thought about surgery, for practical reasons not aesthetic ones! My nose is used as a brace to help with support on longer exposures. ;)

To be honest I thought by posing the original question it would be ignored but surprisingly it's a novel and interesting topic. :)

I made enquiries about surgery and all they could offer was to graft a socket & ball head on the end so i could use it as a tripod:D

well I use the right eye, down to the fact that im pretty much blind in the left one, due to an accident at work a few years ago:rolleyes: .
I did the test and funnily enought my right eye is the stronger.I dont know if thats because its adapted or whether it was the stronger in the first place.

Hey liquid, when I used to skate I was goofy footed too,I seemed to drop in better on the halfpipe than my contemparies,I always put it down to my footing:D .

    Interesting topic this:thumbsup:

Photography, as any art, might profit from a stronger input from the creative right hemisphere of the brain, which is connected to the left eye.

    Ocular Dominance

    From Wikipedia

    10. The Camera Test. The subject brings a camera up to his/her face. Whichever eye they use to look through the eyehole is their dominant eye.
