Just about to order my X-BOX but need to know about the connection options.

I would like to be able to connect the console to my amp using and s-video cable and also have 5.1 sound, what do I need to do this ?

Do I need to order anything else besides console and games or will I get what I need in the box ?

    Good choice of console :D

For DD5.1 sound you will need to buy a seperate AV Pack for the Xbox.

Microsoft make an Avanced Scart Pack that has optical outputs for 5.1 sound, but as you want to use S-Video the only lead that might fit the bill is the Saitek S-Video Cable but I am not sure it this has DD5.1 output.

In one of this months XBOX mags ( the one with free video ) is a small thing on these AV Packs.

Theres not much info on them but the one looks like a small black box which plugs into back of the XBOX.

On the box are some connectors, one looks like it fits and S_video cable and there also seems to be one for an optical cable as well as normal audio cables.

Do you think this is what I need ? Any ideas were I could find out ? Also if it is what I need do you think I then use standard S-Video and optical cables ?

The official UK site only shows
Advanced Scart - which is RGB scart and has optical output
Standard AV scart - composite to scart with no optcial output

    US have
Standard composite - comes with machine no optcial..
Advanced AV - SVHS and stereo audio and optical
Hi Def - Component and stereo audio and optical..

All will work with all systems..so just get a US kit if the UK ones don't suffice..

    Hi Duncan

I`ve seen the box (called Advance AV Pack) in the mag aswell, It would be the one you need if it gets released.

I`m waiting to hear from my local EB store if its going to become available, I`ll let you know if i hear anything.

I would also like to connect via my amp and this US lead definitely seems like the one to do the trick. Count me in for 'where you ordered from' and 'when it arrives' information :)

    Cheers

Get an RGB to S-Video converter. These work an absolute treat.

You'll need the advanced scart pack though.

And also not as good quality as a direct S-Video connection, I've had one of those convertors and although it's convenient I wouldn't recommend it if you want the best image you can get...

    Cheers

I ordered at the end of Feb and there's no sign of it being shipped yet :(

Anyone know where else to get one in time for Thursday?? Is there any sign of a UK version being released on launch day?

    Cheers :)

what was in the advanced av pack?

i have bought an xbox and have a Tosh 32ZP18Q TV this has 3 scarts the first being RGB, component inputs and 2 optical inputs

So what do i need to make it DD5.1?

Is it the advanced scart pack with RGB scart and optical lead. It seems a bit steep at 19.99 as I have a spare optical lead but nowhere on the xbox to plug it in.

Or the mentioned advanced AV Pack what exactly is in this pack?

Is the RGB scart really worth it i was going to use a non RGB scart as i am already using the RGB scart input for sky so using it means also buying one of those RGB scart splitter things

I must admit i was shocked the manual didn't even mention how to connect it to DD5.1

You need one of the sets of leads to get the optical out which is attached to a break out box !

I think Dixons do a lead pack for about £15 which has optical + RGB scart + S-Video output so you are covered with all connection options :)

Thats the one that i've just bought for my soon to arrive XBox. :) I did a quick deja search and most people thought it was good, though there were supposedly problems with having the S-video and RGB connected simultaneously.

I would say that if you want to buy that one don't get it from Amazon , I originally ordered it from them (Monday) and it has a delivery time of 1-2 weeks. In the end I cancelled the order and bought it from Gameplay instead, costs a little bit more, (13.98 including delivery) but I got it this morning (Thursday)

If anyone is still looking for the Advanced AV Pack or the high definition pack, both are available from MX2, albeit they'd be imports as Microsoft in it's infinite wisdom doesn't consider us worthy to release these over here. Go figure.

    Hi,

There isn't a problem with s-video and rgb... the instructions on the Joytech cable tells you you can't use them both at the same time.

Scart was originally wired for rgb before s-video came along. A scart connector wired for s-video uses some of the pins that were originally intended for rgb, so you can't use s-video and rgb together without interference.

The High Def AV kit has component outputs which aren't too common in the UK. If you have a tv with component inputs then you can use them instead of rgb.

I ordered one from amazon yesterday. Like Laura ses they quote 1-2 weeks, but my delivery estimate was 07/01/03 after 30mins.

It's worth waiting 1/2 an hour to get the actual delivery date rather than the 'safe' guess.

    P&P is £1.99 extra...

Oh! I'll also try to remember to post a success/fail delivery post!

Just remember that with PAL consoles are +not+ supposed to support component video out. Its a bug that is being plugged in new Xboxes and with the Xbox Live upgrade!

kevenh, looks like they've got more in since Christmas.

I put my order in first thing in the morning, and at the 5pm, it was still showing 1-2 wks, and I didn't want it holding up the XBox itself just for an AV lead.

Amazon sent my cable on time!

Does what it says on the box!
I'm sure the quality of the cabling, etc. will be similar to other high street bundles.
That game one seems over priced - but that opinion isn't based on trials.

I'd like some one like www.lektropaks.co.uk to make us a cable!
