I am after a new digital camera and have up to £400 to spend (but preferably less!)

I want at least 3MP (preferably higher) and at least a 3x optical zoom. It must be small and decent Macro abilities would be useful.

So far I am considering the Canon Digital Ixus 500 and the Nikon 4500 (although this is a bit big, it has microdrive ability and excellent macro functions - but it is big!).

    Any other advice/recommendations welcome :)

    Thanks in advance
    Chez

The new canon S60 is out next month. It will be round the late 3 ton mark. It takes micro an flash cards. It's 5mb, 3x6 optical zoom. the lens is 20 to 100mm it can go to 200mm if you add the tele converter.

Thanks - it looks good, but it looks a bit big...

I have the ixus 400. The S60's not much bigger, it will deff fit in you're pocket. Its better then then any of cameras in the ixus range feature wise. Best bet it is to walk in to a jessops and have a look. they'll price math pricerunner if you print the site out to

I've got the older S30 and would think that like the S40/S45/S50 it will be the same size as the new S60.
The S30 is 11 x 6 x 3cm (w x h x d) andalthough it is biger than some of the new compact digicams it is not too bad and I do carry it around a lot of the time when on holiday etc which I simply don't do with my Minolta Dimage 7! It doesn't fit in a pocket, but does attach to a belt (in its case) or fit in a small bag.

    Mark.

I bought a Canon S80 last week, and I'm more than happy with it. Also, it's only £250!

    The S60 is 4.5 x 2.2 x 1.5 in. Its smaller then the S50. weighs 230 grams

    The ixus 400 3.4 x 2.2 x 1.1 in and is 185 grams.

Not a great deal in it, i have the 400 myself. Its a very good camera, but i'm going with the S60 when it comes out it has more features, plus with a 200mm lens add on.. it beats most compacts hands down.

    Thanks guys.

The S60 sounds good, but I wish it looked as nice as the Ixus (what I really want is an ixus that takes microdrives, I guess!)

I really want something I can fit into my pocket.

it'd fit in ur pocket no danger mate. Its about an inch bigger. The 400 is well small, so's the S60 really. You'll lose out on features if you go to small mate.

Was looking for similar spec and after much research and looking at different camera user forums I decided on Fuji S5000, which has great quality and a 10x optical zoom!!

    http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/normal_search_result.php?PHPSESSID=&keywords=s5000&x=0&y=0

Cheapest price I found ... usually around 300 and official price around 395 apparently. Awesome quality pictures. Very pleased with this little camera, but not a 'shirt pocket' item. Still quite dinky though to me!
