Hi Guys, after a little help...

I'm looking to buy either the Sony STRDB870 or the STRDB1070 within the next couple of months. The amp will be connected up to a Sony DVPNS700 DVD player and a Sony MDS-JB940 MD deck. Is there anything that I need to consider or any advice you could give me in order to help me make a decision as to which one??

I also wanted to check whether or not the amps are both SACD compatible - I know the 1070 is but how about the 870?? Also, does anyone have a picture of the connections on the back of either of these so I could compare them?

Finally :)rolleyes: ) does anybody have an idea of the best prices around at the moment? - I've seen the 870 for £370 and the 1070 for £450 - can this be beaten???!!!

    Many thanks :)

    Kelvin.

I would suggest that if your gonna go for one of these 2 amps then you will be able to get a good discount on them very shortly as the replacement models are due out in May/June respectively..although they are not announced yet on the sony websites, a helpful chap in my local Sony centre showed me his trade brochure..all the new models will feature PLII...

For photos of the STR-DB1070, checkout this link:

    http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/...asp?a=0&s=0&g=10420&id=morephotos&i=158DB1070

Can't find any rear views of the 870 I'm afraid.

Main differences are: 1070 is 6.1 channel (870 is 5.1) and has 2 sets of 5.1 ch inputs (870 only has the one set).

I received the new Spring / Sumer 2002 Sony Brochure at the weekend. The STR-DB1070 and STR-DB870 are still shown. The new receivers are the STR-DE685 (100WPC, DPLII, SACD tuned), STR-DE685 (100WPC, DPLII), STR-DE45 (80WPC). All three have Dolby Digital and DTS.

    Hope this helped!

    No!

Only other model in the AV Receiver range is the top of the range (yucky gold!) STR-VA555ES.

Where have you seen the 1080?

Did you actually see this with your own eyes ? A search on the web proved fruitless.

Yep !! Thats why I've held off buying an amp so far, Im torn between a 1070 & a Denon 2802, both sounded great but as we know the 1070 doesnt have PLII...so hence the wait to demo a new 1080.

    Thanks a lot guys :)

Rear views were really helpful - I take it that aside from a couple less AV inputs/outputs on the 870, the only other difference is only having one 6 channel input facility instead of 2? This isn't a major problem though as I'm only going to need the one for SACD :) Only thing now of course is I'm still undecided.... aaggh!!! ;) Tempted to wait a little longer for the new models. Maybe I'll try to get a sneak peak at a brochure :)

One more question (sorry!) - is the only way to connect multi channel SACD through the 6 channel inputs?? I know that the Digital out's don't carry a multi channel signal and couldn't think of any other way to connect them. As it stands at the moment I'm likely to have cables coming out of the 6 channel outputs as well as the digital out's on my DVD - is this right??

    Kelvin. :D

a digital output can carry a multi channel signal...but due to copyright laws, SACD players are not allowed to have them, as it would allow for digital copying.

Don't think I was particularly clear.... that's what I meant re. my comment on the digital out - sorry. :) So is the 6 channel input the only means of multi channel connection??

Also.. thought you guys might be interested to know that after speaking to a guy at Sony today, I found out a bit more about the new models. The STRDB870 is staying in the current range and only the 1070 is being discontinued in the "DB" range. The new model, the 1080 is identical EXCEPT for the fact that it incorporates PLII and they've abolished the 2 way remote. :)
