    Help!!

My old Sony KV28FX60, has been taken away to be repaired, but looks like im not getting it back because it will cost too much to repair. so my insurance company has said have this money, and get a new tv. So I want to go Bigger, 32". But i dont know which one to get, do i go and get another sony because all my other equipemnt is sony (But i had some many problems with the old tele, colour distortion).

Or do i go with another manufacturer ?

I was going to get the Sony KV32FQ75 but i have heard of the banding problem.
Im not going to pay the premium of the new KV32FQ80

    What should i do?
I just want a tele that sits there and has no problems, sick of problematic tv!

I know responses will differ but any help will be greatfull

    Jim

I have just seen Loewe Vitros are £1350 and Aconda’s are £1450 at Empire, are these too much of a premium.

I'm sure that you're considering the Philips Pixel+ set as an option.

I can tell you that my 9617 has been one of the best purchases I've ever made, with superb pic, sound, good geometry, excellent focus etc. etc.

People's preferences do differ and as chegz60 said, it's best to demo as many sets as you can.... having said that I know which one I would choose :D

I'm also in the same boat. Looking for a 32" TV that seems to get the general thumbs up. I've gone from Sony, Panasonic to Philips and now have concerns over this choice too! As someone else has mentioned before, perhaps I might as well accept that I'll be unhappy, in which case perhaps a Tesco/Safeway special might be the answer?

One question regarding the Philips 9617 though, and perhaps any Pro Logic TV that comes with sound built in, what's the audio quality like? I reckon I'd be better off with a separate sound system BUT is this really necessary? I'm not a serious user like a lot of the "guys" on this site so would be less critical all round. BUT I sort of like the idea of a separate like the Sony DAV800/880. Is it really much better and does it give me any extra features?

...my 1st post so treat me gently

At the risk of changing the topic slightly... the 9617s built-in Dolby Digital sound is rather good. Although it cannot reach to quality of a good separates system, I think it comfortably beats many cheaper set-ups and outclasses every other built-in sound system that I've heard. :)

    Wally.

Have you got a current Hi-Fi,as even if you hook a TV/DVD up to this you'll notice a big difference.

The really big difference comes in when you get a 5.1 amp and sub, which is a million miles better than any built in TV sound system.

Go get a listen to a 5.1 system.

As for TV,sorry can't recommend one as it's a minefield to pick a good one.

    Wayne/RCT,

Thanks for the info. I do not have any hifi that could be used to plug into so I really am starting from scratch. Think I will go with Plan A: Not worry too much about the audio quality on the TV and go for an external home entertainment system. It makes particular sense as I don't even have a DVD player at the moment. I use my PS2 to play these which is OK but no doubt could be better.

Now just to work out which tv to buy. Almost bought a Panasonic PL1 or PL10 this afternoon but bottled out. Still not sure what to go for. The more I look into it, the more uncertain I become. One of the downsides with newsgroups!

    Wally.

The PL10 got a bad review from What Video as it's 100Hz,which I would avoid if I were you.

    I've got a Philips 32in 32PW6515 coming Tuesday @ £604 delivered.I'll let you know if it's any good.

    Wayne,

All my postings so far relate to my desire to buy! I've bought nothing yet. Since the last post I wonder whether to go for a more expensive Sony DX100. A mate has just kitted himself out with the super NX100 so I reckon a demo is in order.

Please let me know about your Philips though

    Now you're being silly :) .

Them Sony's are soo expensive, you'd be better off,if I were you with that much money,to go that bit further for a 42in Plasma, which is my dream TV.

Def go for external sound system.

Which City/Town/Village do you live in?

    Wayne,

Sounds good. Sorry to be a pain but where can I find QED on the web? Also I assume this model has been discontinued as I cannot find it on the Philips web site?

    I presume this is a 50Hz machine?

    Regards

    Good look.

It really is hard to fault.

It's in a different class to the one's I've had before.

It looks great and is really well made,as it should be.

The picture oozes class and even when you switch it on and off,it's so silent.

The sound has surprised me with it's bass depth, treble detail and stereo seperation.

    Wayne,

Just saw a 6515 up at Dixons in Reading. Looks very good, even by the usual poor signal standards that plague TV shops. Price in Dixons £798.

See,£604 is a bloody brilliant bargain for what you get.

Has it got PAL+ do you know,as I'm sure I read somewhere that it has?

QED price has gone up to £656! Glad I got in before the rise. Wonder why this has gone up? I assumed they were discounting to get rid of them as the model does not appear to be current any more?

Probably because it was a special offer and they know people now will still pay this new price.

I think it was £1000 when it first came out.

Nothing to do with my review of course :) .

That's what I thought but I was pleasantly surprised.

I am really trying to recommend to you a good TV you can live with and I hope you are happy with this one.You can always send it back and don't be afraid to do so,as you've got to live with it.

I had to turn down the contrast quite a bit,as it was set far too high and turn the sharpness up,but every ones tastes are different.

Result! It turned up this morning and so far I am too a very happy Philips/QED customer. I've only been able to check the analogue feed from our C&W cable plus try out a couple of DVDs via my PS2 but your earlier comments seem to apply to my set too. Kids (5 & 7) are in heaven and the words "cool" and "wicked" were mentioned numerous times. My thoughts so far:
    - clear stable picture. I have to strain to look for flicker
    - geometry seems fine
    - glorious colours, especially on DVDs. Monsters inc looks fab
    - smart looking set too
    - Great value. I would have probably spent > £1k and got nothing better and quite possibly something worse.

Sony DAV800 turns up on Monday.

    I'm happy you're happy :).

    Monsters Inc does look great.

Have you watched any DVD's in widescreen and via RGB from your PS2 yet?

I think you would be hard pushed to get anything better overall, unless you get a Plasma, which I still want ;).

    Is this your first widescreen?

This is my 1st widescreen TV. I don't plan to buy another one in a hurry. Maybe when a 42" plasma comes down to about £1k I'll think about changing.

My PS2 is connected into tv via a scart connector. It takes the red white yellow leads (composite video?) of the PS2 and lets me plug into the tv's scart. I've bought a more expensive chunky cable that I will be able to use to connect the new DVD/home cinema thing to the TV.

Do you know if you can get better quality tv/aerial leads? It struck me last night that the ones I've got are probably crappy cheap things. I've read a lot of stuff telling you to get a decent DVD to TV cable but not heard anything about better quality aerial leads.

If you mean the aerial lead just from your analogue cable/video etc just into the TV,then they're all the same quality really and very cheap.

Even the £3 scart leads from Argos are fine with me.

You should try RGB out from your PS2 to the TV's EXT 1 scart, you'll be knocked out by the colours, especially Monsters Inc.

When you get your Sony DAV800 make sure you select RGB out in it's menu. The TV auto selects RGB via EXT 1 only though.

If you get any probs just ask us on here.

    BTW,how old are you,I'm 38?

    :)
