Having moved out of the big smoke I'm finding it very difficult to find any stores to view new TV's
The only option near me was Currys that had 60-70% of their sets in dark mode IE off, the ones that were on had
4k content being played so that was of no use.

The TV's I wanted to compare were the Sony XR65X95 and the Panasonic TX65JZ1000B while they did have some Sony TV's they didn't have the model I wanted on display, as for Panasonic they had none of this brand in the store.

Can you order online and just return the set if you don't like the picture ?

Looking at TVs in a shop is pretty pointless as they're usually set to "Vivid" mode, they can have questionable sources, there's loads of bright fluorescent light, etc.

Most retailers will do returns and exchanges with no issues.

I would decide first though if you want OLED or LED. While OLED is the better technology for picture quality, it's not ideal for everyone or in all circumstances.
