    Hi all

does anyone know of any good retailers in London (preferably central or north) that have a good range of newer plasmas in stock and willing to demo?

I'm interested in things like the Pioneer PDP508XD/5080XD, Panasonic TH50PZ70B, Samsung P96.

    thank you.

You might want to try Sevenoaks S&V. They have Pioneer and Fujitsu. There's a branch on Greys Inn Road near Holborn. Check the web site for location and call ahead first. I've had recent experience of SS&V though and it wasn't a positive experience.

From personal experience it is very difficult to find an AV specialist that will show all models, properly setup anyway. Best bet is to narrow your choice down to two and go from there.

Yeah, I spoke to Sevenoaks in Swiss Cottage this morning. Unfortunately as you also said they don't do Panasonics and I would really like to see the Pioneer & Panasonic side by side.

Tottenham Court Road has 5-6 shops with quite a wide range of TVs..

Last time I was there I saw several shops with the above mentioned screens. Maybe not the samsung.

But they are mostly set up poorly and the shop assistants dont have a clue and feed you with the common "1080p = automatically amazing screen" garbage. They also refuse to let you fiddle with the settings, so its not the most ideal demo.

John Lewis generally have both. Nottingham and Oxford Circus recently did. But they won't be set up. Also depends which models you are after. JL, the last time I looked had Pio 8G and Panny PX. The PZ wasn't released then.

    Thanks for all the replies!

I visited lots of shops in Tottenham Court Road this evening. I did find a place that had both the Pioneer & Panasonic but both were fed an SD signal and the guy refused to plug them into an HD source (even though other plasmas in the shop were displaying HD so I'm sure it was just a matter of pulling the cable from one of them and plugging it into the one I was interested in buying).

John Lewis didn't have the Pioneers on display, and only the 42" Pana on display (but neither that or the 50" in stock so I can't buy from them anyway)...

I think I'm going to give up with trying to get a good demo. Tbh the Pana TH50Z70B looked absolutely perfect in one of the shops where it was set up well. I really can't see how much better picture quality the Pioneer could offer to justify the extra £1000. And I'll get it from the shop that had it set up properly since they were super helpful even if they were not the cheapest ones.

    Oh something else:

In one shop they had the Pana PH42TZ70B and the PH50TZ700 side by side. The image on the 700 looked a bit better (sharper and better colours) than the 70, even though I've seen people here suggest that the 70 has a new & improved panel. I hope that this was just a setup thing, and that Panasonic hasn't sacrificed picture quality in order to get a 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

Which shop in London was that can I ask? And are you sure it was the 50Z70B (the new one that I can't find a review of)?

This shop was ask right? The setup on the Pz70 there is atrocious - image is really blurry compared to the PZ700 below it. My theory is that its a marketing ploy to get you to spend more money.

I saw this in ASK as well, I took a look behind the 42PZ70 they had set up and there seemed to be composite into Scart Adaptor and component connections, I very much doubt the component input was being shown as the picure was very blury! Sales assistant was clueless also! Couldn't see behind the 50PZ700 they had underneath because of the huge stand and all the sales paraphernalia they had around it. Picture on the PZ700 was superb though.
Think I'm gonna go with a 50PZ70, set up correctly with a good source, it should offer a great picture if the PZ700 is anything to go by.

It might be worth having a look in Selfridge's on Oxford Street, as they've got loads of plasmas on display. I can't say for certain which models they have (as I haven't been in for ages), so you might want to give them a call first.

You know you might be right, it may have been the 700 and I just assumed that the 70 would be at least as good. The shop was on Tot. Court Road on the opposite side of Ask, but I don't remember the name.

Yeah, that was the one. The idea that it was intentional crossed my mind, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and not attribute to malice what can more easily be attributed to incompetence. :)
