How do you guys change from B22 bulbs to E27 bulbs?

All my current pendant fittings are standard bayonet B22 fittings. I'm going to change all these to Hue (or Tradfri) bulbs. I could go down the route of getting B22->E27 converters for each fitting, but this is a pain, as I can't find a bricks & mortar retailer selling these (excluding Ikea, as that would mean a special trip). Or I could go down the route of changing the B22 fittings for E27 fittings, but again can't find these freely available.

Therefore, has everyone gone for online purchases of the required fittings (if so, where from?), or am I missing something?

What about Amazon for the b22 - e27 converters.

Is that the preferred option? I really am surprised that none of the usual suspects (B&Q, Screwfix etc) sell E27 pendants. If the majority of smart bulbs come in E27 fittings, there must be a massive gap in the market for E27 pendants for those who don't want to add a converter between the pendant and the bulb? I do feel that I'm missing something fundamental here though lol o_O

Ikea has a large selection of e27 replacement pendant fittings. IMO adapters are not the way to go. E27 bulbs are available everywhere, infact you get more choice than b22.
I've also bought just the pendant fitting from eBay.

Just go to any electrical wholesaler in your area. (They are also online)

Yeah, Ikea is an option, but just means a longer drive.

Care to share the eBay item number?

I've searched all their websites, but can't find what I'm looking for. I just want a replacement pendant set in E27 not B22. I can't believe how hard it is to find such a simple thing!

If you search "E27 Edison Screw Cap Socket White/Black Pendant Ceiling Light Lamp Bulb Holders". Lot of sellers available.
They are not the greatest as there is no strain relief for the cable (had to use cable ties), but they are cheap and do the job.

Cheers :smashin: Just got to find a decent UK supplier now and see what delivery times are likely to be...a minefield in itself!

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for, but ideally from a high street/bricks & mortar store...seems that's not possible though. Just finished a phone call with a local electrical wholesaler and they speculate that it's something to do with regulations that mean B22 is the standard and E27 aren't widely available. They wouldn't sell a pendant set, only a BC to ES adaptor

Yeah of course, and if I was going to spend to buy everything new I'd go down this route. However, I'm looking to be a bit smarter, and buy from classifieds etc where E27 are much more prevalent. Even with the costs of adaptors/new pendants, I'll still save myself money compared to buying the B22 kit/bulbs brand new

Unless it's changed recently it's still difficult to get them from a wholesaler.
TBH our way if wiring lighting where the power loops in and out of the ceiling rose isn't that common elsewhere and historically Bayonet was much more common in the UK until relatively recently.

You'll struggle to find a direct replacement pendant set, you may find just the lamp holder and reuse the existing rose or you may find a set but it won't have the extra terminals we use for the permanent live and neutral and will need some sort of terminal box for the wiring.

Sorted - went into Homebase Clearance and managed to pick up E27 lampholders for £1.05 each  Therefore I'm reusing the existing roses etc and all is good

I just bought a load of Hue E27 lights on a whim only to face the same problem!

I have found the "lamp holders" (ie. the bit of plastic that hangs at the end of the pendant into which you screw the bulb) cheap on ebay. How easy is it to remove the B22 holders and replace these? Is it just like for like?

Very simple, yeah that's about right. Just remember to switch the power off to the lights circuit at the fusebox before starting!

Just be careful with the cheap eBay stuff. The original fitting you're removing will be designed to support the cable and ultimately the weight of any shade you hang from it. Both the cable and design of the fitting are specified to carry a certain weight in the BS standards.

Some of the eBay ones I saw when I was looking did not look had no cable support whatsoever. Yours may be ok but just something to be aware of
