    Hi all

A while since I've posted, but I need your help!

We're extending our house and looking to wire in a Cat5e wall sockets as part of the build. To get the Cat5e cable to the room we need a run of external cable. Problem is, I have no idea where to buy it!

From reading around I believe I need black external solid core Cat5e cable. Anything else I should look for (UTP?) Any suppliers people could recommend?

    Thanks!

UTP is the type of the cable. The "cat" level shows is specification and thence performance which implies what it can be used for.

IMS the principal difference of "external" grade UTP is in the sheathing in that it's more resistant to the effects of "weather," - frost, UV, etc. which eventually cause the cable to crack up and allow water ingress. Some might be "armoured" also to resist the effects of men with hammers, if you really want to go mad. Or you could consider installing into conduits (pipes basically,) c/w a draw string which would avail you pulling though additional/replacement cables in the future.

I would install more than a single cable run - at least two. Cable is cheap compared to the hassle of installing it. In the extremely unlikely event of a cable failure, if you only have one, you're snookered until it's replaced. If there's an alternate in situ, you have a sporting chance of getting up and running again fairly quickly (unless of course the "men with hammers" have sheared through both cable runs at the same time - it happens - but I guess you cannot mitigate every risk without spending heaps.)
