Made a rare excursion to Channel 5 last night to watch Where Eagles Dare for the nth time.

Despite the terrible and obvious special effects, the fact that it was shown in 4:3, with a terrible print, in mono of course, and that I saw it on a humble :D 32" widescreen TV, I enjoyed this sooooo much more than my recent trip to see Matrix Reloaded.

Great Alasdair MacLean plot, superb casting and acting, and proof that you can have an action film without an action-to-dialogue ratio of 100:1.

    Fantastic!

And I've just found that it's finally due for release as a Region 1, DD5.1, anamorphic DVD on 2nd September, for £12.99!!!

    Hi Joel,

Yes, great film despite Channel 5's best efforts to find the worst print they could! They sure don't make 'em like that anymore. Does anyone know why Warner are releasing the DVD when it was an MGM film? Seems weird...

Don't know but maybe this is what's holding it up.

R2 version of Poltergeist suffered the same fate with the same two studios and is still awating release!

    >Does anyone know why Warner are releasing the DVD when it was an MGM film? Seems weird...

It's because the rights to a whole batch of MGM titles were bought by Warners some time back. Sorry I can't be more specific about this. I did have the details once upon a time but appear to have mislaid them. Warner is releasing 'Eagles' in Regions 1 & 2. I suspect it'll be the same arrangement everywhere else.

Re the comments on C5's print; according to the Warner Bros chat over at Home Theatre Forum 'Eagles' has undergone a full fledged film restoration which has to be good news.

Apparently the 70mm showcase versions, which were blown up from 35mm, featured six track stereo mixes. Hopefully Warner has been able to locate and use these as the basis for the 5.1 mix.

The UK release of 'Eagles' is Nov 10th. Same specs and likely the same extras (although Warner hasn't said anything about those as yet).

BTW I fully agree with your praise for 'Where Eagles Dare'. It's one of the most entertaining action-adventure movies I've ever seen - one of those all too rare occasions when everything came together.

    Hi bastogne,

Thanks for all the info! :smashin: It should be a good soundtrack if they can source if from those 6 track masters. I don't think I'll wait until 10th Nov for the R2 - the R1 is out on 2nd September. ;)
