Does anybody know where (and if) you can get the cable ribbon connectors to connect the equipment? I have a tape deck that is missing only the 8 pin control ribbon that connects the Cassette Deck Rx-x844 to the Technics SU-X840 AMP?

Any help greatly appreciated.

The Header Connectors and the Ribbon Cable are actually relatively common, the underlying question is - did they use standardized size connectors, or do they have a proprietary size, and are they any twist or crossovers in the cables.

As an example, here is a common 8-pin ribbon cable connector.

Ribbon cable is pretty standard, you can get just about any size and strip it down to the number of connectors you want.

And is it 8-pin (2 rows of 4 pins) or is it TWO ROWS of 8 pins each?

As you can see this type of cable/connector does exist, and if it is just a straight through cable with no twists, and standard cable that will fit the pin headers will work.
