Hey All, I am new here and just wanted some friendly advise!!!

I have just made my fist step into HC by purchasing the following equipment:

    Sony STR-DB930
    Sony MDS-JB930 (UK special Edition)
    Sony CDP-XB920E
Sony PS2 (As games machine & DVD Player )
    Mission 771e (For L & R)
    Mission 77C1 (For Centre)
Warfedale (can't remember model) for Rears
Mission 73PS (As Subwoofer) connected to external amp)
    Toshiba 25" 4:3 Nicam TV
Cambridge Audio Studio Reference between CD-Amp & MD-Amp
    Ixos 104 between TV-AMP & AMP-MD
Ixos optical lead between PS2 & Amp (for 5.1 DVD's and PCM gaming)
    Profigold PGD-481 coax between CD-MD
QED Silver Anniversary bi-wire for Left and Right
    QED Silver Anniversary for Centre
    Gale XL-189 for rears

I got the whole lot for under £900

    :D

I am extremely happy with the quality of sound from DVD's but I find when listening to CD's the sound is harsh, not warm and smooth like it used to be when I had my old JBL control 1's with an ancient Technics Amp & CD player.

Is the problem in the CD player?
    The Interconnects?
    The Amp?
    The Speakers?

If the problem is within the CD payer then can anybody suggest a good upgrade.

I am thinking of getting the SONY DVP-NS900 DVD player next month, would this be suitable as a CD player also?

    Many thanks

    Chris

    Hi

Dont know the Sony stuff that well but it could be either the amp or the cd player causing the sound to be harsh.

Has the cd player got an optical or coaxial out? If so try this so your using the amps DAC´s. If the sound is more to your liking, stick with it.

The Sony 900 dvd player is supposed to be a pretty good cd spinner as well, it would be a good upgrade and certainly better than the PS2 for dvd playback, just doublecheck theyve sorted all its problems out (do a search in the dvd player forum as it had an RGB problem).

Hopefully you´ll get some more input from those with Sony equipment.

    cheers

    Thanks mate

The Sony CD does have optical & coax digital outs, the coax is going into the minidisc deck so I could use the optical into the amp, I'll let you know what I think!

I don't think the bug has been fixed unfortunately but my Toshiba TV looks better in S-Video than in RGB so it wouldn't affect me anyway.

    Cheers

    Chris

I'd swap the optical for the coax. Run the optical to the MD deck and the coax to the amp. Coax is superior for listening to music.

running optical or coax from the cd player should make a difference.. though the Sony STR-930 isnt that great an amp for straight stereo.

I had a str-925 for almost 3 years and was reasonably happy with it. with a bit of tweaking in the menus you can get it sounding okay... but not great.... its not that musical an amp, and far far better when running anything in surround sound.

other amps would sound better with this equipment.

not very hi-fi but have a play with the mid/bass/treble options in the menus for your CD source to see if you can get the sound more to your liking.

On my 940 I use a Coax lead to the DVD channel and have that set to AFD for movies etc. I also run QED phonos from the DVD to the CD in channel on the amp and have that in Analogue Direct which I believe the 930 has as well. It gets rid of all the processing junk and sounds far superior for music.

The Sony 900 should be well suitable for music, my 735 is as good as many CD decks.
