I'm toying with the idea of buying a 65" LG E6 TV. (I hadn't planned on ditching my VT65 plasma for a couple more years, but the sudden decision to eliminate 3D TVs from the world may force my hand).

If I want to get the cheapest price (because the shops are anticipating bringing in the 2017 LG models and are dumping the older ones) but not risk there being no available stock left anywhere, what's likely to be a good time to buy?

If you have the means i'd say now. I would definitely be snapping up a 55E6 if I had the funds but sadly post Christmas holiday spending reality is getting in the way.

But the 2017 models aren't due out for a couple of months yet, surely? So won't 2016 prices drop a little further? Or are stock levels already dropping?

      How long's a peice of string :).
Wait too long and they may all be gone, buy too soon and the price is higher. I don't think anyone can give you an accurate date.

You need to keep an eye on stock levels at various retailers you would want to buy from i.e those with 5 year or longer warranties. John Lewis has real time stock levels shown (sort of) and currently has more than 10 in stock. Richer Sounds is showing non available on-line but in store only.

If stocks are low and demand is high (everyone waiting until the last minute) the sets won't be dumped price wise much more than they are at the moment. That set is already £1,200+ down from middle of last year. You might save another £100 to £200 but they must now be getting down very close to the store buy in price. They won't sell them at a loss just to clear warehouse space. They'll rather be now adjusting down their stock purchases.

Depends also how well LG manage their production but I'd expect them to be just in time like most manufacturers now. And they will be needing to clear the production facilities to make the new sets. So if they don't have lots of unsold stock either they won't be dropping their price to the retailers.

The panels are made in the far east and shipped to Europe for final assembly (say two weeks shipping and a week for assembly/packaging etc). Add another week for road transport to LG UK warehouse and shop distribution. That's one month. Add the same for the new 2017 sets, that's another month.

The drought (out of stock) seen for these models several times last year shows that LG Europe probably isn't keeping large quantities of panels unassembled. They also know that customers will be playing the wait until the last minute bin end sale.

So you need to know when the new models are coming out and deduct roughly two months from that to guestimate when the 2016 sets will disappear from the new supply chain. After that it's retailers UK stock only. Hence why you have to keep an eye on their stock levels.

If John Lewis stock drops below 10 I'd buy ASAP if I was in your position.
But even then like amazon they may do the show only two left in stock and then an hour later when they've suckered everyone in to panic buy show full stock again.

Another thing to think of is if you buy one of the last ones available and you have a problem set you won't be getting a replacement as there are now none to replace it with. If lucky you'll get a repair with a replacement panel, if not you'll get a refund and no 2016 set.

But you may get lucky with an open box one still with full 5 year warranty at a very low price if you look around now. Depends then on the reason why it is open box.

You can take that chance if you wish (and i'm being forced to) but if I had the funds i'd go for it now. There are some rumblings afoot that are early warning signs of a possible early disappearance of this set. The just mentioned Richers online stock being one of them.

If you add say, 999 of a TV into your basket, it will give you the precise number. 55" E6s was just below 200 in stock and 65" was 130ish last time I looked, but who knows if they'll get more in.

Sorry but going completely against this now stuff. The 2017 model just announced and will take 3-6 months minimum to be available
You expecting the 2016 TVs to disappear in Jan? That's a little bit too early
Best time to buy is Feb to April, sometimes even later but there is a risk
When they have to make space for new range, thats when the window is...

      Just my 2 cents

I forgot John lewis let you do this like amazon. 130 sounds enough to hang fire even if they are not getting more stock in. If the 130 increases it shows there are still sets somewhere in the China --> Europe --> UK pipeline. If it keeps on going down....

Normally I would agree with you but the fact that 3D TVs are about to disappear into the history books could well be a game changer so brings to mind the old saying "He who hesitates .........".

Best of luck to the OP to call it right.

      Martin.

On or around Easter weekend (15/16th April) we should have a double whammy of new sets in stores (if the last two years are anything to go by), and bank holiday sales. Currys will have their usual TV100 code, and various Quidco offers, and there'll be at least four or five "bah I'll never give Currys my money, JL is da best yo!" posts per thread, per day, while others are freaking out waiting for their new shiny to be quite literally thrown at them by Currys/KnowHow delivery drivers...

The e6 is a cracking TV and the price is incredible and will continue to go down.
It is an option for me too if prices keep going down down down...don't have 3D so not as critical as for some (but raving reviews are appealing)

However, I dare to say that for me, ces fulfilled all the expectations...I love the Sony oled (hot favourite) and even the xe93, I love the new lg oled range and the improvement in brightness and hopefully other stuff (subject to review)
The pana also is appealing even without dv but less than Sony for me

Not important for most but important to me that 2017 sets could be potentially upgraded to hdmi 2.1. I keep my TVs for 5-9 years so it matter a lot!!!

The differential in prices and results of the reviews are the key factors for me. congrats to all lucky owners of any oled. Never buy under pressure and when you jump, ignore the whole world as long as YOU are happy

Just to add to what others have said, don't forget that some shops are still even listing the 2015 LG OLED models which still fetch £1200. Take two things from this. Firstly the e6 won't disappear over night. Secondly the price wont drop drastically.

But the 2015 models had poor reviews and was a first/early gen OLED, so most people would have stayed away from them that could afford to buy new.

The LG B6/E6 have been selling in greater numbers, and as we have seen on this forum alone, there are lots of potential buyers out there hoping to get a last minute bargain.
Even my local Currys only have the B6 on display now, and Currys website are not showing any 55E6 available for delivery, so probably only have a few left in store.

I'll start to panic when John Lewis run out of stock. It's all risk at this point but I also think the B6 will sell out first.

      Probably.
John Lewis now have only 111 65E6 (down from 130 at 3pm ish). That's 19 sold in 8 hours this afternoon/evening so the 65E6 may be shortly behind...
Numbers of 55E6 haven't changed much at all.

I'm leaning towards not bothering, actually. :( I'm extremely sensitive to motion blur/judder, and all the reviews say that the E6 is worse than most LCD displays for this. My VT65 supposedly has very good motion handling, but even that annoys me - I can't imagine what something worse would be like.

I have to say I have not noticed either motion blur or judder on my 55E6 and I do, to my wife's annoyance at times, watch rather a lot of football. Maybe I'm just lucky or not sensitive to either, I don't know, but do know that there is not another TV that I would have in its place. Also, if you're a fan of 3D, the E6 is absolutely brilliant with it.

Whatever, as I said before, best of luck with whatever route you decide to take.

      Martin.

I'm not anticipating any immediate problem with stock and hoping that a 65 inch E6 might be around the £3000 mark by the end of March, based on the fact that it can be had for £3500 now. If not, that money will be going on a 55 inch 2017 model.

My E65 has no motion or blur/judder issues or mine would have gone straight back.
I watch loads of football and F1 and golf all display fantastically without any issues.
What reviews are you referring to ?

hdtvtest is usually pretty reliable for stuff like that.

They say the LG OLEDs resolve only 300 lines on pans (or 650 with TruMotion switched on, but that leads to "soap opera effect"). In the same test a VT65 plasma resolved 1080 lines.

My C6 does occasionally have motion problems with panning - there was a scene in Narcos where it was VERY obvious, but solved with dejudder set to 5 (and that didn't seem to cause any major SOE).
However - the majority of the judder I notice seems to be due to frame rate (The Dark Knight opening scene where the camera is zooming in towards the building is a good example) and I assume that is a problem on any kind of TV.
