i have been gradually digging out my old DVD SD movies since upgrading to a Panny bluray player, to see what they look like upscaled to 1080p. I am interested in buying more BD films, but have a lot of good movies on DVD, so i have been considering my future investments! which ones do i upgrade when they are released?
This got me going as I have many more to check out, so I thought to save me time you may like to share your 'top SD DVD upscalers' on this thread.

my top 5 dvd's upscaled at the moment are:

1/ iron man - immaculate
2/ star trek 'nemesis' - although some pic noise in places
3/ anchorman - a great transfer
4/ big fish - stunning colour
5/ incredibles- my boys love it, the upscale is near perfect.

what is worth a rental or bargain basement buy maybe?
thanks for your input.

Good thread (although perhaps not the most relevant forum). 'POC - At World's End' looks good but that was through my Tosh EP30. Not watched on the PS3.

Children of Men:smashin:

Saving Private Ryan. :)

Now that is one films I would like to hear in 7.1 lossless audio.

High bitrate DTS HD MA would be stunning in terms of the gruelling first 15 minutes or so of the film.

(Not that the DVD release is anything short of spectacular).

Another favourite of mine is another Spielberg classic - War of The Worlds.

No, not the correct forum.... so welcome to the on disc and download section. ;)

My choice currently is The Commitments... great audio.

Never been impressed with many films upscaled. Ones that did look good -

A rubbish film but Daniel's Craig Casino Royale was impressive. Well it was impressive until I saw a bit of the BD.

Any of the Pixar films.
Curse of the Golden Flower
I, Robot
King Kong
Starship Troopers
Fifth Element

Not a film but Supernatural season 3 is good.

Iron Man to me looks poors but then the disc also looks poor not upscaled. I ended up getting the BD because of it.

some good recommendations so far folks -

saving private ryan - in the collection - need to watch
poc - seen these upscaled, but not as good as bd!

keep em coming:smashin:

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith - not my fave film, but upscales very well (via PS3).

Yet to watch the orignal trilogy on my TV/PS3 combination.

I rented my lad Water Horse the other day - he was watching it when I got home from work, I thought my god the Blu-Ray image looks good - then it dawned on me it was the DVD version

Generally I can tell the difference, but not always instantly.

The Shining (This is my winner)
Batman Begins
Moulin Rouge
King Kong
Cars
Wall-E
The Mist
POTC
POTC 2
LOTR
The Ultimate Matrix
Finding Nemo

I'm sure mine is from the Stanley Kubrick Collection(?), mine must be a previous release.

The Stanley Kubrick discs were initially released in fairly poor conditions. There were complaints and then they released remastered versions a year later or so. The packaging was similar, it just said something about them being remastered later on.

As to this whole upscaled thread, it may just as well be called, "what's your favourite SD tranfer?" Upscaling as such doesn't really vary.

I sense Blu-ray/HD envy. ;)

The one that really stands out at the moment is my R1 copy of From Beyond, I don't think a full hd version could get that much better.

:) True, but it proves there are some great and some not-so great tranfers out there.

Strange Days. The German double disc set is not only uncut, it features an astounding transfer that really showed what DVD was capable of

I am interested , do you let the tv upscale ?
As i have the pioneer 5090 tv 1080p
also a pioneer lx01 upscalling dvd player amp unit .

Not sure if im supposed to have the lx01 on the highest setting which is also 1080p .

Upscaling is different on each device, you have to just look to see which works best.

Another interesting thread. I watched No Country For Old Men last weekend on my Toshiba EP10 and got so impressed by the PQ I had to double check that it was actually an SD DVD.

Not watched the whole film but theres a scene in The Edge were the 3 main actors are in the woods and Anthony Hopkins is on abou the way to find south without a compass. And the go to a stump of a tree that holds water and the moving scene looks to be 3D and when he puts the paper clip on the leaf you can see every deatail of the material of his jacket.

The Incredibles - looks amazing. I know Pixar stuff has the edge, but still, this looks good enough to not bother with the BR version
Hot Fuzz - can't fault it, looks better than a lot of Blu Rays I've watched
Revenge of the Sith - all that rubbish CGI never looked sharper
Saving Private Ryan - stunning picture (and sound)
