    Nice simple one, this.

Mine's ATRAC3Plus - small file sizes yet still gives a decent SQ, plus gapless playback. Enough said.

    Anyone else?

I'm with ATRAC/ATRAC+. Good compression with little sound loss.

Only thing is it’s not a standard format, so I can’t can pick up a disc with the files on and take it round to a mate’s house because they won’t be able to play the crazy format.

I still rate MP3 high as it is one of the most popular formats.

    Atrac / Atrac Plus format

It is a balance of compression and sound quality, which if recorded at high bit-rates can be better than most other formats.

It only loses due to the fact that: Its not a standard on the market. It is one of the top formats, industry / business - wise due to its compression and copyright protection, but for the average user, it is better substituted by other options.

256K LAME MP3. Sometimes not LAME, but usually LAME. Mainly for the portability, but listening tests with the Stax Omega II and Sennheiser Orpheus headphones (I would assume as reference as you could get) have indicated to me that ATRAC, MP3 and AAC pretty much all achieves 'enough to be fooled most of the time' transparency at 256K. There are very minimal benefits in going higher, certainly for portable use... especially as players which claim maximum battery lifes of 30 hours and above with ATRAC tend to have a drastic falloff in battery life at anywhere near decent bitrates. e.g. ~160K datarate average playing a mix of 128K and 320K data = ~50% of claimed battery life on the HD5, ~95% of claimed battery life on the iPod, ~105% of claimed battery life on the iAudio X5.

All of my cd's are ripped into ATRAC3plus for the reasons you give.

Just gutted I did it all before the DRM-less v3.2 (which is still not officially released in Europe).

MP3 for the simple reason that it works on everything, and with the right encoder sounds great.

Am very surprised at not a single vote for Ogg Vorbis.

    Why?

Because every time a new DAP gets released, there's always a murmur of disquiet from Ogg fans, complaining at the lack of support for their choosen format. Yet now, here on this forum, not a murmur of support for said format. If any manufacturers are reading this thread, surely they'll be justified in assuming that Ogg isn't that important in people's view?

    Can I have two favs...?

mp3 for my DAP because of compatibility and ease of use.
monkey's audio for my music server (HTPC) because of excellent SQ.

I'm also with Atrac, but essentially because of being gapless. In terms of sound quality, I think it's superior to most at very low bitrates, though I don't perceive it as better than Lame or Ogg Vorbis at 128kbps or more.

Curious how one of the most dreaded factors in Sony's players by almost every tech Web site is winning here. Sony should do what Microsoft does and just give its encoder to others. Imagine if Foobar could convert Flac to Atrac without adding gaps, as it does with Lame MP3? A lot of the Karma folks could line up for Sony players.

I voted for ATRAC because it is gapless and better compatibility with my HD3, and MP3 because it has better compatibility with everything else!

its got to be mp3, whilst an old format its supported by all players and restricted. Naturally atrac comes first in the poll as there only seems to be sony fans on this board!!

Im an apple fan John, even own a latest generation 60gb Ipod, but wont use AAC as i cant use that format anywhere else, thats why i stick to humble MP3 files on my ipod so i can use them whenever and wherever i like without and DRM issues

Good point, I've actually ripped my entire collection twice, once in AAC and then again in MP3 format for better compatibility. I'm also in the process of ripping my favourite CDs in Apple Lossless.......... what a sad life I lead ;) :D

    I haven't voted...

But I would like to ask a question.

Which format is the best, if I will mostly be using my new HD5 as a "jukebox" on my nearly-high-end stereo at home and in the car? The best combination of SQ and space on the HD5.

    Thanks.

I think you'd be better off with an Atrac format. I would encode a few tracks at different rates and see which you prefer from a quality/space perspective

are they vbr mp3s? SonicStage looks at the first part of the song and takes the first bitrate it sees, so if it is highly compressed SonicStage will transfer as mp3, regardless of the average bitrate. The solution is to manually convert, which is a pain but does work...

Haven't checked this poll in a while. Wow! If this isn't proof that gapless playback is important to consumers, I don't know what is!
