I have recently bought a Sony 870 DVD HDD recorder and being a 74 year old thicko I can not figure out what is wrong when I play back a HDD recording. This is the resulting play back picture I get on the TV screen It is a flickering black and white speckled picture with a lines across.

Extra info here
The latest Sony 870 DVD HDD recorder at present connected only to a LG 15 LCD TV ( model 15LCIR) connected via a co-ax cable daisy chained through the recorder to the TV. I dont think it is a co-ax problem because there is a good analogue picture when the recorder is turned off. It is also connected via a scart cable. The TV has 1 scart socket and the recorder has 2 sockets. Recordings were from BBC 1 and Channel 4, I can get clear recorder menu screens onto the TV. The recordings (that are faulty on playback) were from both the manual timer and the EPG. As I have said new technology is a bit beyond me but it does seem to me I have messed up one of the settings

Hi there,

If you could provide a little more information about the equipment you have (makes and model numbers would be ideal) and exactly how you have it set up currently using what cables, I may be able to help you further.

If you could also give me an idea as to how you went about making the recording and from what source that would be great.

Regards.

Hi there,

I have had a read through your DVD recorder manual and my suggestion would be to first check a few things regarding your connection methods. In particular, you may want to check which SCART socket you have your SCART cable connected to on the DVD recorder. – If you are connected to the top socket (LINE 1 / DECODER) then you will need to change sockets and connect your cable to the bottom SCART (LINE 3 – TV) as the top socket is input-only.

Let me know if you are already connected to the right socket or the results after switching (if relevant), and I’ll post back with further assistance if necessary.

Regards.

The scart cable is already connected to the bottom socket on the recorder.; Thanks

Hi there,

Okay, the next thing I would suggest to do would be to have a look at page 136 of your DVD recorder manual as this section details how to access the relevant menu system for the connection settings. Once in the menu, make a note of what settings are currently selected.

I have been unable to locate a manual for your TV model at present, so what I would also suggest is to have a scan through the TV manual and see if you can locate the information relating to the available connections for the TV combined with whether or not you have an RGB-capable SCART socket(s), - as SCART sockets can be either Composite Video, S-Video or RGB Video or a combination of any of these 3. Your TV manual should make a point of specifying that the SCART socket is RGB-capable if this is the case, so you shouldn’t have to dig too deep for the information.

From here, if you post back with the relevant information I will see if this provides any further insight.

Regards.

I followed your instructions and checked the settings as you pointed out (page 136 in the recorder manual) and everything was as it says in the manual. I then had a good look at the TV manual and found there is a INPUT BUTTON on the remote that gives the following inputs TV,AV1,AV2,RGB TV,RGB PC,. I guessed AV1 would be the proper connection but I still got the speckled screen. More in hope than anticipation I tried the others but of course no luck.I should tell you the rest of the story, last week I bought a new Sony KDL40x2000 TV, this recorder was bought this week to match up with the new SONY TV not the LG TV I am trying to set it up on. When I first got the recorder I connected it up to the Sony (I know it uses AV6) on this set.I then decided get out of the wifes way and try to set it up upstairs with the LG TV not very successfully up to now. Tomorrow I intend to set it up with the Sony again using the HDMI cable I bought to see if the fault is still there. Then I hope if you dont mind, I am going to leave it alone for a few days because I have been trying to sort it out all of today and to be honest about it my head is going round in a twirl. If it does sort it out tomorrow (with the Sony) I will post up on the forums sometime tomorrow to let you know. More than likely I will be back after the Bank holiday hoping you will continue to give me your expert advice

Many Thanks

Alan
Edit Friday
This playback problem solved

Well I said I was a thicko

This morning (Friday) I went to disconnect the recorder from the LG TV and as I was looking over the back of the recorder to disconnect it I realized what an idiot I was because I had connected the co-ax cable into the digital input sockets in the centre/back instead of to the sockets to the left/back of the recorder, after all the wasted time it may have taught me a lesson to be more careful, but knowing me I will be back asking for help in the not to distant future.

Thanks for your advice

Alan
